Question About what measurements would a D cup be?

    Just wondering what the measurements across, vertical, and diagonal would probably be. What are the ranges? I know it varies but I'm looking for a ballpark average. I just don't want to buy another costume on the swapmeet and cry to myself in the dark because my cups runneth over. LOL ,r:;

    I think it's around 7 or 8 inches all around....am I close?

    Thanks everyone.

Re: About what measurements would a D cup be?

It will depend on what band size was used to determine the cup size.

In general, a 34D would be the same cup volume as a 32DD, 36C, 38B. A 40D would be the same cup volume as a 36E/F.

It's generally safest to ask for specific cup measurements and compare those with a well-fitting bra that you already own to be sure.

The measurements vary a lot! Is it a 30D, a 36D, a 40D? All of those will be very, very different!

One thing you could do is measure your favorite, best fitting daytime bra. That will give you an idea of what you need to look for.

Alternatively, you'll have to post your actual daytime bra size so that people who match can pull out their stash to measure for you.

Hi, Birdielee. I feel your pain -- 38DD here!

The thing is, cup sizes are proportional to band sizes. A 32D and a 40D are going to be two really different Ds, but the cup sizes on a 32D, a 34C, and a 36B are actually going to be the same or very similar. People don't always know that or take note of it when they post.

Sooo: What's your best lingerie bra size, both band and cup? With a little more info, I'm sure we can help you out. The Busty Babes of Bhuz are a great, um, support group.

    Best,

In normal lingerie bras, I wear a 36D. I'm not sure what to look for, or what C or B cup size is close to the 36D and how to figure that out. Please teach me, I'm ready to learn!

I am a 38D in real life...but a DD in costumes. This 6.5 x 8 is not going to get it for me. Always ask for cup dimensions in inches up and down and sideways! Support group...snort!

Easy :) For the size 36D, it will be a similar cup volume to
    32E/F
    34DD
    36D
    38C
    40B

but the cup shapes and placements may vary, so it may require some sewing to make the ones farther from your actual size fit properly.

    Good luck!

If you're a 36 D, my guess is you want to stay away from B and C cups all together (that is if you are trolling the swap meet). When I was a 36D, I couldn't fit into C cup costumes (ok there was one, but I grew out of that promptly). Event those marked as true Ds are not often Ds. You have to use measurements.

Re: About what measurements would a D cup be?

I use cup size only as clue in deciding whether I will look at a costume posting. However, posters tend to go by their own cup size when posting and this may not correspond to the cup size of a person with a larger or small rib cage. For example a DD on a woman with a really small frame may not even be a D on a large woman.

I recommend measuring over your own breast while wearing a well-fitting non-padded bra and then comparing with bra cup measurements from the seller. You also need to measure your rib cage under-bust and compare with the end-to-end length measurement of the bra.

When measuring the 'underbust', do I just wrap the measuring tape across my rib cage? Or right under the bust line...like right where the underwire of my bra is?

....oh, and what about (costume) bras with the right measurements...but they are too shallow? How can I avoid the shallow cups...is there a way to know they won't be deep enough (assuming I'm using the swapmeet and can't try it on)? Or will the measurements alone cancel out this problem? If a bras cups are too shallow, is there a way to make it work...a way to avoid side/top/bottom boob spillage?

Re: About what measurements would a D cup be?

My ideal bra cup measurements are something like 7 vertical by 9 horizontal with an 8" diagonal. Do cups this size seem to exist? Nope... but I'm coming to the conclusion I have to have at least a 7" vertical cup measurement.

I'm a 34DD (but I wear a D/DD in dance costumes) and I have a very small ribcage and a rather petite frame. So it's also difficult to find something that isn't disproportionately huge.

Re: About what measurements would a D cup be?

Costume bras should fit like regular bras - flat up against your chest wall, right under your breasts, with straps pulled up to support the breasts. If you are getting under boob ooze, your chest band is not tight enough. If you are getting over the top spillage, under arm ooze the cup size may not be large enough. If the cup is large enough, then check to make sure the shoulder straps aren't too short. But be careful of getting them too long. Then you won't have enough support and it'll be a jiggle fest!

I'm a 36DD with my normal bras. I tend to look for 8x9 measurements or higher when looking at cup measurements, so I think 7x8 would be good for a 36D.

Michelle has it just about right. I'm also a 36D and the new costume bra I bought last month measures 7 high verticle by just over 8 across horizontal. This is a halter bra, but I measured the hard cups inside not counting any extra fabric up into the straps. This was marked a C/small D but had 2 inches of padding that I pulled out.
I've found that the style of the bra is something to take into consideration also. I tried on at least 20 bras marked from C all the way up to DDD and found 2 out of all of those that fit right and looked nice. The over the shoulder strap bra that worked for me was a DD.
Birdilee, you are not the only one who has bought their dream bedlah here from a bhuz friend only to find that it just doesn't fit. I did the same thing last year and ended up selling it to a classmate who looks just great in it. She still says it's my costume, LOL.
