    my balls hurt

Picked up some tall heels and have been wearing them all day...the balls of my feet hurt when I wear them, is this something you get used to over time?

Couple of questions for you... Is it the bones or the skin? and What kind of heels are they? Just regular heels, or dance shoes? If regular heels, it's tough. They don't usually have much support in the heel, so we tend to lean forward all the time. If they're dance shoes, they should have more support in the heel and you should be able to put some more weight back.
Another thing is when you have really high heels, you *can* develop meta-tarsalgia. (not really sure how to spell it, but), it means the little bones in the balls of your feet shift forward and don't stay where they should. I'd try a little pad in the shoe that puts some support between the toes and ball of the foot. Some pads are just for that, some are gel, some more foamlike. When I had it, I found a few Dr.Scholls type drug store available pads to put in all my high heels. It took a while to get everything back in the right spot, but now I don't really have any problems.

haha, made me look. you might win best thread title 2010.

those sticky insert gel pads are good for occasional use but can add up $ for everyday wear. maybe a shoe repair can add a more cushioned insole to replace the current one...if they are work shoes that warrant the expense

heheh the title and then seeing Zorba as the most recent post gave me a good giggle this morning, thanks!

I feel that almost every pair of high heeled shoes that I buy always are uncomfortable when i first get them but then they generally loosen up and mold to my feet and become much more comfortable (or maybe it is because I just get used to them but, either way, they get better over time)

A couple of thoughts about high heels:

    1. They can give you a bunion. A bunion is a deformity of the foot. It can cause your transverse arch (the one that spans the base of your toes horizontally across your foot) to fall. If this happens, then a section of the ball of your foot that was never intended to hit the floor when walking or dancing will start doing so. You'll build up a painful callous in the ball of the foot behind the second toe that presses deep into your foot with every step you take, and you'll start having agonizing pain in the ball of your foot.

    2. They can cause your Achilles tendon to shorten over time, making it uncomfortable or even painful to stand flat-footed.

    3. They can cause your calf muscle to shorten over time, making it uncomfortable or even painful to stand flat-footed.

Taking #2 and #3 together, you'll find yourself at a higher risk of injury because your muscle and tendon will lack the flexibility they need to protect you.

A good Go-Go store will have these with a good cushioned insole. Yes, they are made with dancing 8 hours a day in mind.

Make sure when you don't wear them, you use good supportive (athletic) shoes or something and stretch your calves and achilles to keep from getting too tight there. Also a nice pedicure once in a while never hurts. ..l;,..l;,

I had a short (5' even) co-worker with exactly this problem. She wore 3" heels day after day and eventually she could not stand or walk flat-footed. Her back alignment was also very screwed up.
