    Need ideas for folkloric headpeice?

Hi, I need to make a very folkloric headpeice to go with a cream, beledi / galabayer dress i have bought. It has silver and maroon around neckline ,sleeves, hem.I want to use it for saidi but i have no headgear to go with it.I would love to make something very folkloric ,i was thinking maybe of striped material, not sure though ,but i do want to make it long at the back i know i would not use chiffon for this but dont want anything to thick or heavy either that would get to hot.I have a pic in my head of very long scarf or something of the like with headband to keep it on. Be gratefull for some ideas on style and material to use would stripes be a no no ? thakyou for reading regards stef...c::

I made one once by sewing a piece of lace onto a fabric headband. I trimmed the edges of the lace with lightweight coins. I danced at a festival with it several times and never had a problem with it coming apart. Here's a pic. I'm in the black and gold beledi dress in the foreground.

This is what I did. Sorry no pics, but I can try to take some this weekend.

Start with a cotton scarf. For a rectangle, roll up the short edges so it's a long roll. You can do the same thing with a square, but squares work better if you start rolling at one corner. The end result is a long roll that's thicker in the middle and thin at the ends.

Now take beaded hair skrunchiesm or stretchy beaded bracelets, or something similar and thread the rolled scarf through them. Put the scarf on your head.

You can tie it and leave long tails, or wrap each long tail around your head again, threading the tail through the scrunchies. Tweak the position of the scrunchies

Or take three long, narrow rectangles. Roll them as above, and braid them together. You can tuck or pin almost anything to the braid as decoration - shells, flowers, feathers

Make a matching pillbox style hat out of pellon/buckram and then cover it with fabric that matches or compliments your dress. I've also seen people do a bandanna like wrap on top of the head, but with fabric that is much longer than a bandanna.

Question Re: Need ideas for folkloric headpeice?

Thankyou ladies for your help, and ideas i found an old soft belt that i nearly threw out you know the ones that tie up in the front? It is really pretty It;s black with silver seqins all over,it looks really nice when i held it to my haed and looks very folkloric, only problem is my dress is cream with maroon /silver border, and belt is black/silver.Do u girls think i could use it if maybe i combined it with some maroon to match the dress i would kind of like a long veil at the back, and use the belt for the headband and add veil to it ?but still not sure if i can use chiffon, with cotton dress as a veil because it;s surposed to b folkloric but I;m sure i have seen this done befor. Also i have to find or make a belt as well not sure to use chiffon coin belt or just a scarf. very grateful to u girls for any ideas on this please if u think it's best to forget using blck/silver belt and do something else that;s fine .thanks girls sorry it's so long i just wanna look right.thankyou again stef.

You can use tulle for the veil portion, to go with your belt/headpiece.

You can use maroon chiffon for a veil.

I'd wrap a maroon ribbon, satin or velvet, around the black belt to tie the dress and chiffon veil to the headpiece.

I like chiffon coin hipscarves, and I think a black hipscarf with silver coins would go nice with the black belt on your head.

I made one for my Sophisticate Assuit knockoff dress. Took a leftover scrap of the assuit fabric and made a tube that I stuffed with fiber fill. Closed the ends added a small piece of black elastic to finish the headband. Then I added an inexpensive pin I bought that features a turquoise scarb mounted to silver filligree. Simple, cheap, visually effective.

I need to post a picture of the whole costume. Princess Farhana took a picture of it (with me in it)this weekend but I forgot my own camera.
