    Silk gauze for veils?

I've recently discovered "silk gauze" fabric online in 3-4mm. It doesn't look as shiny as habotai silk, but it's sheer! I was wondering if would make a good veil. Anybody have any experience with it? How does it float? Does it dye well? Is it sturdy enough to use?
    Thanks for any insight!

For me it is too light. The lightest I have is 5mm and that is Jes' 55" half circles. It's tough for me to control the lighter-weight choices.

for me too, too light. i have one and i LOVE it, it's gorgeous, but i just don't dance with it. a bit scared of shredding it i guess lol, but it floats amazingly. awesome to play a bit with, but hard to dance with because it's so slow. could work for a really slow piece maybe?
my fave weight is 5mm for most, but 8mm is great for fast moves like spinning.

I have used longer rectangular silk gauze veils. They dye just fine. The problem's I've had with them are they seem to stick more to cotton or rhinestone claws for instance, they are slower, and they have to be ironed out or they seem shrunken. They are not shrunken, but they have to be ironed and stretched once you get them out of the dye bath and dried. They are not easy to work like the 5 mm, but I like them still because of the quality and the transparency. I think they are workable, but it's an adjustment. Seems like the dyes turn out different than the china silk, but still nice. Oh yes, and if you cut it yourself, be sure and pull yourself a thread trail. It's very easy to cut it crooked, even when you could swear you're not. Pull the thread!

So there's my 2 cents on the matter.

Yes you can. But others have already pointed out their lightness - means your dance must be very slow - but they float like a dream. I once threw one up in the air at the end of my show - - -

    - - - and caught it at the beginning of my show the next nite! ..l;,

They're delicate creatures, and stick to EVERYTHING...

Try one. You won't use it often; but when you do, your performance will be special...

Haha, Zorba... Sounds like nobody is in love with them, but wouldn't be throwing money out the window to try one out. Thanks, all!

You may or may not love yours. It is a challenge to dance with one, and even more of a challenge to do something interesting with one. Impossible? Of course not. Hard? Yep. I can't claim that *I* can dance well with one, but its fun when the mood strikes me. In fact, I have a performance next week that I was wondering what I would do for it - I think I know now... :)

i found that dyeing it and dancing with it was like working with limp sock..using a dyed one that was ironed was nice for photo shoots so long as they didn't require movement

look into silk chiffon..some have a slight gleam to them that makes them oh so slightly shiny..they move better and are easy to dye.

I'm currently still on a charmeuse kick :) heavier satin-y silk for smaller double veils, they ROCK

I thought silk chiffon was the crinkly stuff? I'd like to find something more sheer than 5mm habotai, that doesn't have the drag of chiffon. I prefer lighter weight, except with double veil.

The silk chiffon I have isn't crinkly at all, very soft and flowy. Its also rather heavy. YMMV...
