    Homemade ice-skating costumes

An interesting tidbit from a blog I enjoy about the move from homemade ice-skating costumes to today's designer frocks. It sounded familiar, and reminded me of some of the discussions we have had/are having here!

    Text:
"Fun Fact #2: People used to make their costumes by hand; today they are high fashion.

The 1976 Olympics were the last in which figure skating costumes were mostly handmade. Here Dorothy Hamill competes in a costume her mother made for $75:

Today, costumes frequently cost thousands of dollars. Michelle Kwan and Nancy Kerrigan both competed in Vera Wang (who, in 2009, was inducted in the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame for her designs)."

I think you just ensured that downtime at work tomorrow will involve trying to find one-line information about skate costume making.

    Re: Homemade ice-skating costumes

I rollerskated when I was young and my mom made my costume (and my skate pom-poms, too). My friend had one of those stretchy little deals with a skirt that was one piece. Mine was constructed from a cheerleader costume pattern and it had separate bottoms.

After finding out that Lotus Naraja's mom makes her costumes, I really want to make my own custom costumes. Her costumes are unique and looked incredibly comfortable and practical for movement.

I'm terribly picky about how my costumes are constructed and even pickier about how they fit. I figure the only way I'm going to get a tough, well-fitting costume is to make it myself. (By the way, by "tough", I mean that I want to be able to wrestle someone to the ground without losing a bead. I feel all clothes should be constructed that way. ..g.:)
