    Super long hair sisters!

I say 'super long' because today's stylists call bra band length hair 'long' and to me it isn't. I'm talking at least waist length and beyond.

How the heck do you wear your hair for dance? Mine's layered but the shortest points are top of my upper hip. For dance I've been wearing it down with either metallic fabric headband or an LRose velvet turban headband. Looks fine from the front, but when I turn around & the band can't be seen anymore I feel like my hair looks so blah - naked, it looks naked.

I've wondered how a few small braids sprinkled here and there would look or if it'd look goofy, ditto on ribbons. When your hair just goes on & on I feel like I need something pretty back there, ya know?

My hair is waist-length too. I just wear it down, although I do tease and spray it up to make it look fuller and higher on the top. Hair that length is an ornament in itself. Sometimes I wear the sides up with some shiny clasp but as you probably know, hair that long is heavy, even if it's layered, and you really have to have that clasp firmly in place or the hair's weight will just pull it out.

    Re: Super long hair sisters!

I have really long hair too. I often do what you do and wear a headband, but I've been trying to experiment with different things because I feel the same way about it looking a little plain from the back. I definitely need something to keep it off my face since I don't want to be having to push it back constantly if it falls in front of my face. I love the way it looks curled but since its so thick and heavy the curls only stay in for less then an hour so I can only do that if I will be dancing very shortly after styling it. For my most recent show I did a side part with a half pony tail type thing where I only pulled the sides of my hair above my ears back. I put in a clip to cover the elastic and scattered these little rhinestone things throughout my hair. They are like mini spirals that get twisted into your hair and it looks like floating crystals. That look went over really well, I got a ton of compliments.

    Re: Super long hair sisters!

I have hip length hair, and I use it as part of my performance. For me, I let it loose with a few sparklies on top... those can be headbands, clips, those spiral-y things, whatever.

I've also done the I dream of Genie look and pulled it way on top of my head in a ponytale with the ends curled. It actually was a lot of fun to dance that way (very cheeky number) and I had a ton of compliments on it, but it hurt my scalp and gave me a headache!

Tiny braids sprinkled throughout are nice in the tribal-y look, but it just doesn't translate for the sharqi look for me. Sometimes a light spray of hair glitter can give it an extra bit of shimmer.

For a spanish fusion look, I once wore it in a french braid (tucked under) and had black, gold and red fabric ribbons attached at the crown and a bit lower that really looked great for those sharp head turns and such.

I've been toying with the idea of clipping ribbons throughout my hair, too, but not on top, you get me? So that they show when doing hair tosses and spins and such, but they aren't visible if you're standing still. I haven't tried it yet, but it's in the back of my mind to experiment with.

I wonder about adding glitter like alot of us do on our bare skin - it would wash out easy. Guess I'm not really part of the club - used to have really long hair - regret cutting it and am in the process of growing it back out.

I have "thrown" some glitter on my hair. It does wash out pretty easily too.

    Re: Super long hair sisters!

It's a tricky trying to find a style that fits your dance style & personality and also looks good on you. I've tried pulling my hair into clips and on me it doesn't work - looks like something I'd wear to the office or on weekends to shop & more importantly it makes me look like I'm 12.

I used to do a regular ponytail, and it's okay, but my hair looks better framing my face. I did experiment with Aveda's Be Curly shampoo & conditioner and then rolled my hair on bendy rollers. It worked and it lasted, gradually loosening over several days but lots of body even then. It was pretty wild the first day tho & I'm not sure how to style curly hair without it looking wild. I haven't tried dancing with it curled but I may in a couple of weeks, depends how brave I get, lol.

I've thought about glitter hairspray across the back, too.

I have obnoxiously thick, somewhat wavy hair that is a little bit past hip length. I still am having a tough time figuring out what to do for performances.
I always pull it away from my face, as if I don't, I play with it and move it, and thats always been a dance pet peeve of mine.

I will be watching this thread with interest...

I like to have a little texture down the length of my waist lenght hair and usually make braid waves. I make twin braids in damp hair that has a bit of coconut oil/ aloe vera gel in it. They hold very well on my (thick) hair if I make sure to let it dry completely before taking them out. It makes small waves but just enough to add a bit interest.

These look really sparkly, have not tried them however. Long hair friendly because you can cut the length you need yourself.

    Re: Super long hair sisters!

I do a big loose braid with lots of tendrils for a more controlled look, but still wispy for more gypsy/fusion numbers. I add a flower or several small ones here and there for an earthy look. I love clip in feathers too, but it tends to be more associated with tribal fusion.

I've also done braid waves as Elenya above me, it adds interest since my hair is pretty much poker straight.

I will also buy those small clip in extensions strands in colors to match a costume. I use them underneath the hair, so when you spin the color is revealed. It's very subtle, but looks great onstage!

I love bindis and little diamonds glued to in/outside corners of the eyes, so I will try to continue that with my hair with glitter.

Eleyna, I've seen the colored ones (blue, red, etc) at Walmart. The hair colored ones might be fun to try.

    Re: Super long hair sisters!

mine is waist length and, thanks to azhia, i've been using hot rollers after dampening my hair with holding spray....my hair is super fine and very, very straight, and i've been leaning toward a more retro vintage look, and my au naturale hair was too plain for the costumes i was using......when i DID wear it straight, usually with the modern minimalist cossies, i would use blingy barrettes with a couple of strands loose in front to frame my face and look more modern and less severe......for more romany/turkish looks, i braid my hair wet and let loose for tight waves....i'd love to see other options, especially since i wanna bling up more and use those spirally things :p

I wear some little braids sometimes that start near the base of my neck, just one or two with a sparkly something to hold it. I wear them for normal wear too. I use little clippies under some of my hair on the top to give height and fullness. I am lucky to have lots and lots of think wavilicious hair. I like to run my hands through it and use it as a face veil...lol...

My hair is knee-length, and very fine. I go for loose with really sparkly headbands.

You can do a ponytail and alleviate the scalp ache by tying a knot at the top of the ponytail. Just take the hhair, put a knot in it like you would a rope, and work the know up to snug against your scalp. then pin in place with many pins!

For ponys and braids with face framing, I separate the "bangs" part of my hair from the rest (it's all the same length), pony or braid the back, then drape the "bangs" in swoops around my face. Or do a very loose french braid across the front. It softens the face and keeps the rest of the hair controlled (a little!)

oh i love long hair, but my hair is fine so i can't have it too long. i recently cut it to go up to my bra strap. it just looks too flat and heavy when it's that length...even with layers. i will be stalking this thread for pointers lol

I've started wearing the L Rose turbans, and love them!!!
I also do braids while damp, spraying them with hairspray, then take them out for waves, I touch up the crown and ends with a triple barrel waving iron, it lasts for a few days!

Sometimes I'll do a twisted ponytail thing - kinda like the beginning of the bun, but only wrap it once and let the rest hang down. Let's me play with my length but is more controlled on top and provides a good place for flowers.

I'm a fan of the mini-braids! I used to do that to my hair all the time and with ribbons braided in to match your costume could be really cute! You should always 'test run' things before a performance though. ;)

I have really long hair too (up to the hip, sometimes longer, grows much too fast :-/).

I usually curl it with a Babyliss then use massive amounts of mousse and hairspray, it has much more movement and looks gorgeous when dancing (especially if seen from behind) You can also do the half ponytail so that some of the curls form a "waterfall" where I can attach some beads, peacock feathers, flowers, small jewels..

And depending on the costume and the music I might add a touch of hair glitter.

    Hmmmm!
    Great thread!

My hair is very fine and flat and hangs kinda lifelessly IMO. So usually I braid it and bun it, which appears to be a very complicated knot, but is all held up by a hairstick.

I want to leave it down, because, well, why did I grow it to mid-thigh, anyway???

I do have a groovy hip-length brown braid (most often wear it in a braid anyway), and I'm thinking of (and did once) put a bunch of silver rings into the braid, but I can only do that from about shoulders down. .... I was also thinking of putting coins on some bias tape that matches my hair and braid it in. Haven't done it yet. I'll have to consult with my troupe-mates, though, on the hittage. I don't want to smack them with it, but I may.

I also checked ebay and it is being sold there but for way more that the website and the shipping is exorbitant

    Re: Super long hair sisters!

I hate to say it, but sometimes, cutting just a few inches off can dramatically bring your hair back to life. My hair was waist length for years, and just got too heavy to do much with. Now, it's right between my bra strap and my waist with tons of layers in it, and that's been an excellent length. I can put it in rollers, blow it straight, make it wavy, and it stays. Plus, I get more movement when I dance ..g.: But it's still long and luxurious.

As for decoration, I might put some silk flowers in my hair for a more festive look, but I tend to use my hair as a dance prop, so I stay away from anything that could fly into somebody's entree during a head toss

A few years ago, I had these little rhinestones with Velcro backing that stick to the hair. I have since misplaced them, but they were really nice for a bit of bling! And you can even make them - just hot glue some velcro to the backs of some inexpensive crystals.

Your post reminded me of hair spirals/swirls like these and Blinx Bling, very cute to decorate (messy) up-do's or half ups with.

It looks like it's a dutch company making them and I can only find dutch webstores selling them. This one is in English, but I can't find information on international shipping. Maybe you can email them, if they don't ship internationally I can also send them too you if you like.
