Need to cover wrist splints!
Hey ladies, here's my problem - I have a performance with my troupe tomorrow, and I have to wear splints on both wrists. They are too big for any of my bracelets to fit over, I need some ideas! They are black and go more than halfway down my forearms.
I was thinking maybe get some lycra to match my costume (black, pink, turquoise) and sew some fingerless gloves that I can pull over them, but another gal from my troupe thought I could just leave them black and figure out some way to bling them up...
Needs to be fast, and easy enough I can do it with 2 splinted hands! Anyone have a thought?

Re: Need to cover wrist splints!
I gather you will be wearing cabaret or some type glitzy costume. You could find some stretch fabric in a fabric store, make a tube that covers the brace and continues to mid-palm. Sew a loop of elastic to the fabric over the palm and back of your hand, loop over one or two fingers - you would have unusual sleeves with minimal investment. (I sometimes add a stitch that holds the fabric secure around my thumb.) Or a pair of long satin gloves with the fingers removed. I like the fabric tube since it's much more versatile. I often make a matching headband and possibly a necklace. Simple and easy.

I would remove them for the performance, but then again I am a very bad patient.

Re: Need to cover wrist splints!
Oooh, I kind of like the sequin trim idea - I can make sequin "bracelets" that should read pretty well on stage. My costuming is tribaret, lots of coins and sparkles and mirrors, so I can do pretty much whatever I want. Especially since I'm part of the troupe costume committee! And I may make some gauntlet/glovelet things for other performances, since I may be stuck wearing these stupid braces for a while.
I actually sprained my left wrist in class, by doing nothing more than what our choreographer calls the "pot pose" (looks like we are holding an invisible pot above our heads. So I don't dare dance without the splints unless I want to sprain either of my hands again (it actually was the trigger for learning I have some hand syndrome thing. All it means to me is my lovely lotus hands now have to be more like spirit fingers. Stupid hands. Stupid genetics. Pfah!)

What Tourbeau and Catwomyn said. Get all different colors and styles that match the costume.

Re: Need to cover wrist splints!
Can you maybe get something like this? And then wrap it around the splints.

It wouldn't be difficult to make a quick-and-dirty rip off of that idea with a hank of bracelet-sized memory wire and some pretty beads. The only tricky part would be securing the ends--something that a person with wrists in splints would have to recruit a friend with jewelry tools to do....

Re: Need to cover wrist splints!
Oooh dang, you posted that AFTER I came home from Joann's! I have all my jewelry pliers, and I actually could make my husband help out... I think maybe I'll do something like that for my next performance in a couple weeks!
I did find some stretchy bands of these iridescent square sequins, I got light pink, turquoise, and an orangey color that just matches the harem pants that are going under my mirrored skirt... I have some black velvet that I'll sew into tubes to slip over the velcro parts, and hopefully it'll look good, I think it will work. I'll be sure to have someone take photos tomorrow!

Re: Need to cover wrist splints!
Nooo, the sequins killed my sewing machine, so I ended up finding these things at Hot Topic, fabric tubes with "tattoos" on them, and it covered the braces pretty well. Now I need 3 new machine needles. GRR. But the performance went pretty well!

Re: Need to cover wrist splints!
Looking forward to seeing pictures! I sprained my thumb a couple weeks ago making my bed (uh huh - lame) and might be subjected to a splint soon.
