Zill mufflers I don't have to sew
Any ideas? I've used fabric ponytail holders before, but they sometimes pop off mid-session. I read somewhere that baby socks work?

I just bought a bunch of sets for our troupe from fellow bhuzer CatandKali. I highly recommend her. Baby socks do work too but make sure you use socks on all 4 zills or you'll just cut right through them.

If your grocery store carries them - try lemon covers. They come several in a bag.
Pro: They cover the zills perfectly
con: They don't last long so you have to triple them

Re: Zill mufflers I don't have to sew
I used to make my own, and technically they were "sewn," but the skill level is comparable to sewing on a button, and this style of cover isn't particularly expensive, sophisticated, or time consuming to make.
I took a scrap of woven fabric (a quarter yard remnant or less), traced around a small lid four times, and cut out four circles. I used a lid that had a diameter of about twice the diameter of the cymbal, something like the top from a sour cream or cottage cheese container. For each circle, I took a piece of elastic thread threaded double through a large-eyed needle, and made a big running stitch (up, down, up, down,...) around the edge of the circle about 0.25" from the edge, pulled the tension fairly tight (but loose enough to stretch around the edge of the cymbal), and tied the elastic off with a knot. This makes a little fabric "shower cap" for the cymbal. Repeat for the other three circles.

I also purchased a pair from CatandKali. Love them, love them. Great covers. Those baby socks got pretty ratty and fell apart quickly. Interesting about the lemon covers.

Someone suggested to me the big rubber bands that broccoli comes bundled with. You only need them on two zills, not all four. But they also told me not to leave them on all the time... only when you're playing.

I use those little baby mittens for newborns (i.e. no thumb in them). I find they work perfectly and are cheap from Walmart.

One of my students once came to class with her zills wrapped in sticky-taped bubble wrap!
I used to use thick rubber bands, two on each zill in a criss-cross. It allowed a bit of sound, but no real ring.

What I recommend to my students is to go to a garage sale and get baby socks- probably won't cost more than a dime.

I made a pair myself, if you know how to do crochet they're very quick and easy to make. And cute too!

I remember buying some from here:
Zill Mufflers
I think I bought two pair back when I first started dancing in 1999. I still have a pair - they have lasted a long time for me but these are 15.00 for 4. kinda expensive.

masking tape works very well. there is still a quiet dull sound, but it really dampens things considerably.
