Make your own, in about 5 minutes. Use ball-of-the-foot cushions (gel is good) and an old pair of pink or flesh colored tights. A thick pair of nylons could work, too, I suppose. Cut the legs off and the feet. Fold the cushion into the stocking and fold it over and over. Experiment with the placement of the cushion, and when you get it right, put a few small stitches around it to keep it there and tack the stocking folds into place.

Use tights that are loose enough to allow circulation but tight enough to withstand the extent of your activity.

I find that the part of my knee that really needs protection is the lower part of the patella and top of the shin, and the foot pad hits that spot exactly and is the perfect triangular shape. You may need to experiment to find out which fabrics work best for you how tight to make it so it stays relatively in place, and how many layers you need so you can balance out functionality while keeping bulk down.

This isn't a terribly high-tech solution, but the price is right and they'll always be custom-made for you.

I bought mine at a dance store. They are kind of a low profile knee pad. Like these Discount Dance Supply

I wear them low on my knees. I've even worn them under Melodia's and they are not noticable.

I don't know the brand yet, but I am ordering a new very low profile flesh colored one, through my local dance store. Gell instead of fabric padding. I was told they were designed for figure skaters.

I bought some super skinny beige under-knee pads at an online ballet store a few years ago, but they don't seem to have them in stock anymore :(

how does the gel compare to regular padding? is there much of a difference?

Mine look pretty much identical to those, and I found them at a sporting goods chain (Sport Check in Canada--not sure if it's also in the US). The ones I have are sold as volleyball kneepads, and the brand is Mizuno. Mine were more expensive than yours, however ($29.99 Cdn.).

I, too, got mine from a sporting goods store (Under Armour is the brand, don't remember the store).

I have the same brand. :) I bought mine at Modell's. The clerk looked at me like I was nuts when I asked for "thin knee pads," but he was even more surprised when he realized that they actually had them in the knee pad section!

    Re: skinny knee pads?

update: i bought and received (very quickly might i add) the knee pads crystal mentioned. they're great and they did keep my knees from getting totally beat up but not completely, but thats probably because i used them for practice and had 2 hours that involved floorwork. however, without them i wouldn't have been able to manage AT ALL so i do recommend them :)

I ordered them as well - and you're right, Zfejzic, they come superquick! I ordered mine on March 18th and they arrived by March 20th. For anyone wanting to know what the 'pads' are made of, they are 1/4-inch thick, dense felt attached to the body of the pad, which is a lot like an ace bandage. I don't think these would even show under pants.

I'm not quite visualizing this - you wear the tights as usual, but the feet are cut off and you roll up the pad inside the stockings until it is in the right spot? But you say cut off the legs so that can't be right. Can you explain a bit more how to do this, please? Thanks!
