    How do I manage curls?

I'm going to wear my hair curly for a show his weekend, but I'm usually a straight hair person. I tested curling it a few weeks ago and after I brushed it out to get rid of the initial poodle effect from taking the curlers out, it was better, but frizzy. I put a little jojoba oil on it but didn't want to then have oily looking hair.

What drug store or Ulta store product can I use to tame the frizz, so you can see it's curls & not crazy mess, without weighing down the hair? And should I be brushing it to loosen the curls? I tried finger combing but that didn't do anything in terms of l loosening the curls, which is what I needed. I liked the volume created, just not the uber frizz, if that makes sense.

Open to suggestions and advice on how to style curls properly ..g.:

John Frieda Frizz-Ease makes a great line of products designed to smooth frizz. Their Secret Weapon styling cream might be great for what you need. Smooth it through your hair after curling it, then comb through. When I had curly hair, I used to use a wide-toothed comb on it. Brushing it made it more frizzy, for me.

I swear by this stuff smooth infusion(tm) glossing straightener. smooth infusion(tm). collections. Aveda - products that nurture.. It's kind of expensive, but you only need to use a tinyl amount, so a full size tube easily lasts me 6 -8 months.

I have naturally curly hair and how I manage curls is after shampoo and condition when hair is still damp I put in frizz busters (cheaper version of John Frieda's product but just as good) or Pante Pro V Restorative Anti Frizz Cream then I apply mousse (any ol' type) and Tre Semme Frizz and Shine spray. I let my hair air dry at that point but I am sure if you started styling you would have great results. I never use a brush, I don't even own one and just use a wide toothed comb to get out tangles when it is damp, avoid combing when dry... good luck!

I don't use Aveda, but I swear by Aquage styling products, which are also pricey. Even on my ridiculous lion's mane of hair, I only need to use a teensy bit. Salon products are actually pretty economical because you're not replacing your stash every couple of weeks!

Don't use a brush! Run your fingers through your hair when you take the curlers out and fluff. No brush.

Is your hair naturally curly? Straight hair shouldn't frizz up when curled if it's laid smoothly onto the roller, not too much product is used, and the curlers aren't too small.

What is your hair like naturally? What kind of rollers did you use?

put a smoothing serum in your hair, like mentioned above, curl your hair, take out the curlers. spray your hair with spray gel or light hairspray to lock out moisture and hold the curl. then turn your head upside down and shake your head "yes" a few times. once right side up, finger fluff and place as necessary.

curls + brush = rosanna danna

Omg I did look like Roseanne Roseanna Danna until I got it a little calmed down, lol.

My hair is naturally somewhat straight because it's so long, but it takes a wave/curl pretty easily. All I did before was wash with Aveda Be Curly shampoo & conditioner, comb out (I only use wide tooth comb), and roll on those foam bendy rollers. Next day, voile: I looked like an extra from Gone With the Wind when the rollers came out.

Yeah, really you need to perservere with your fingers OR use an afro comb but comb one of the spirals and then flip around your finger to bring it back to form then move on doing the rest of the curls one by one.

I dream of naturally curly hair <sigh>

Re: How do I manage curls?

Hi Ruya I have some suggestions:

    1. Your hair should be 90% or more dry when you roll it. Use gel or setting lotion either while damp or on nearly dry hair right before you roll it.

    2. Spiral the hair on the roller rather than rolling it in the traditional way.

    3. This is important. It sounds odd but trust me and try it. Leave 1 to 1.5 inches of the ends sticking out of the roller. I read this somewhere and it totally revolutionized the looks I was able to get with rag rollers. After trying this I realized that the ends of the hair being very tightly curled was the major contributor to the "look I set my hair with curlers!" look. Leaving the ends sticking out will produce loose tousled sexy waves.

    4. Don't brush or comb. Also, don't remove all the rollers and then try to finger comb the entire wad of ringlets. Remove the bottom ones first and run your fingers through them to separate the ringlets. Spray with some hairspray if desired (probably necessary for performance). Remove the next row up, finger comb those, etc.

adding: I got a hair dryer bonnet that attaches to my blow dryer because I hate sleeping with anything in my hair. I start with dry hair, dampen with setting lotion, roll (I use Snap n Go rag rollers), and then sit under the bonnet with my blowdryer for 15-20 minutes. I alternate between the warm and cool settings because warm borders on too hot when using the bonnet. I plug my dryer in beside my computer and surf the internet while my hair dries.

Its a fairly quick and painless way to get curly hair. Just remember to leave those ends sticking out....

You could experiment with this: apply spray gel or other holding product the night before, bend over so your head is upside down, then braid it and leave it until the next day. You have to bend over and start the braid at the top of your head; otherwise it will be flat.

Like I said, try it now to see how it looks on you. I do this all the time.
