False eyelashes: under or over shadow-So what is the final word?
I am wearing them for the first time at a halfa so want to practice the week before. If I put them on BEFORE all eyemake up, I don't have to worry about getting all my shadow, liner done, and then having a false lash fail...
If I put them on AFTER, will they still stick as well even though I have eyeshadow already on my lids? Will glue show up?
Since I am practicing, can I use the same pair of lashes for a few applications or do I have to use a new pair each time?

Re: False eyelashes: under or over shadow-So what is the final word?
My experience is you can put them on either before or after makeup, but I find it easier to do most of my eye make up first, then put on the lashes, then a final touch of liquid liner... helps make sure any placement oopsies are taken care of. Then, finish off with the mascara at the end. The glue should not show.... most dry clear. (I've had one glue that was black, but that was around halloween, I haven't seen it since.)
I use the same ones multiple times. I try not to get mascara on them too much, and the glue should just peel off, though some brands are stickier than others.
Practicing is a good idea. They can be tricky little devils at times, but if you get them placed and glued well, they're not that noticeable.
Good luck. : )

Re: False eyelashes: under or over shadow-So what is the final word?
I find eyelashes to be the most stressful part of getting ready for a performance so I usually put mine on without any make up at all hours before the performance with a glass of wine in my hand. Then I don't feel rushed if they don't go on perfectly the first try.

What Artemisia and Emma said... the wine during or after, depending on how the process goes :-)

Re: False eyelashes: under or over shadow-So what is the final word?
This is me, too. About an hour before. I curl my lashes and put on a coat of mascara, and liner if the lashes don't have a wide strip. Then I put my lashes on and go relax.
This way, if I have major lash issues (glue my eyelids open, for instance!), it's no big deal to wash my face and start over. If I"m having a really bad lash day, I can give up altogether and just start over and use lots of mascara.
As I've gotten more experienced with lashes, I trust myself to put them on later in the process. But putting them on way early increased my success level with them dramatically in the early days.
You can reuse them. I mascara my lashes before applying the falsies, so they don't have too much gunk on them besides glue, eyeliner and sometimes glitter when I take them off. I've washed them gently in the palm of my hand and even combed them out with a tiny lash comb before. I can get 2-5 wearings out of a pair of lashes before they're too crummy to use -- 3 is typical.Last edited by Lauren_; 03-18-2010 at 08:10 AM.

Re: False eyelashes: under or over shadow-So what is the final word?
I used to find putting on lashes stressful but I don't anymore...but still I would save my cocktail for after I'm done :)
I have done it both ways and I find it easier to do all my eye-make-up first and then apply the lashes. I use Duo lash glue and it always dries clear, so no worries there. Depending on how "whoa!!!" the lashes are, I will touch up the liner.

I do eyeshadow first. Then eyeliner with a liquid liner, once it dries I apply the lashes. Then I touch up the eyeliner if it needs it, but I use a powder liner the for touch-up. Then eye kandy last. May not be the best process but it works for me.

I have a similar process to Alexandria. I do my eyeshadow first, then I line my eyes, apply the lashes and then either touch up the liner if need be, or put on my eye kandy.

Re: False eyelashes: under or over shadow-So what is the final word?
I would avoid putting lashes before eye shadow because falling eye shadow will disrupt the intensity of the lashes (light-colored shadow falling on the false lashes, making them appear less intense). It is also more difficult to line the eyes once your false lashes are on.
You want the areas around the eyes to be as dark and intense as possible to create more depth, size, and definition.
People who have used the false lash application method I taught swear by it so give it a shot and be not afraid of your false lashes!
As an aside, to reduce stress levels, do all of your eye makeup FIRST. Wipe off any excess fallen eye shadow, liner, products, etc, and then do foundation/concealer/the rest. You will be able to focus your attention on doing the eyes as dark and intense as you want w/o worrying about messing up your concealer/foundation application.
Makeup workshop alert: possible mid-west date(s) for the fall...
I also recently used Kawiwi.com on eBay to purchase my lashes for the workshops. They are amazingly sturdy, excellent quality and cheap cheap cheap with free shipping.

Re: False eyelashes: under or over shadow-So what is the final word?
Hi, I wear them every day and then teach classes in the evenings and they stay put. Do all your eye make-up: shadow, liner and apply about 2-3 coats of mascara. No need to curl your own lashes, mine are sparse, short and thin and curling isn’t necessary with my method. Apply glue to the strip of the lashes, let the glue get tacky for about 1 minute, and then apply the lashes. I hold on to the strip at each end with my fingers. I find that tweezers don’t give me enough control.
One problem is that the really long lashes used for performances tend to droop down. No problem. Set your blow dryer to warm and low flow and dry the glue holding the dryer pointing up, like a flashlight when you are telling scary storys..w.: As the lashes are drying you can push the lashes up at the root to get them to dry out and up.
I use dark glue. White glue will dry clear but if you sweat and the sweat gets on your lashes the glue will return to its white color and looks really gross.
I agree that Madame Madeline (I like the Ardell line.) is a great place to get lashes. Mac lashes are way overpriced. I reuse my lashes about 10-12 times. Just peal off the glue after you use them and place them back in their case. If the glue won’t come off without destroying the lash, leave it and the second time you use them the glue will come off much easier.
If you are still having problems with application, cut the lashes into 3’s and then here is where using tweezers works best. Practice make perfect. Good luck.

Re: False eyelashes: under or over shadow-So what is the final word?
Thank you. You can get the eyelash glue from CVS (Longs) or Walgreens or probably any drug store. I use DUO Eyelash Adhesive or LashGrip Adhesive. If you are just learning, using the clear-white will be alot easier because if you mess-up a little it won't show up as much as the dark glue will. Also from Madame Madeline.
