What kind of tail would a mermaid have?

    Hello there!

I am not a belly dancer, but I am really into costuming, which I feel is a huge part of belly dancing. I am working on a mermaid costume. I don't want to wear a fishtail skirt, so I've been looking at alternatives.

So far I've come up with melodia type pants that are very fitted and very flared at the bottom. ORRRR Bloomer type pants with lots of ruffles (however I can't find bloomers that are more fitted at the top).

Also, I'm thinking of making an accent hip scarf with fish nets.

Also ALSO, I want to do some sort of neat top vest type thing with fish hooks to latch it closed. And a Fishnet sweater.

I would LOVE your input on anything you have to say about this costume!

Please leave some advice and where to maybe find the piece of clothing.

I'm looking for a bit more fitted around my thighs, thanks for the input though!

Take a look at the L. Rose bellbottoms here: L. Rose Designs - Online Catalog

They are fitted through the thighs but nicely flared at the bottom. They'd look great in a fabric like the turquoise metalskin for a mermaid costume! I'll bet that if you talked to the people there, they might even be able to do a version that flares a lot on the outside of the leg but not on the inside.

I second LRose! If you look in my gallery i have a simple mermaid costume that I wore for Halloween one year... Brrr! In San Francisco no less. I bought two big clam shells at a craft store and hot glued them onto a bra project I was never going to finish. Add green hair spray, a TON of body glitter and voi-la!

L Rose pants in a green metalskin would be amazing! you could add a fishnet top and or mesh gauntlets?

Completely unsuitable for belly dance, but I LOVE the way these dancers are using these huge blue pants for The Little Mermaid:

I love these "mermaid" pants (see picture, posted on bhuz in another thread). If I could find them, I would totally put a mermaid costume together. ..l;,
