Customizing Lame Wings
I had the opportunity to try out some lamé Isis wings and to my surprise really loved the way they caught the air and flowed in comparison with some organza ones I also tried. One of my teachers is able to get a really good deal on a set and I'd like to purchase a pair, but plain metallic lamé isn't really my style (I'm more of a Tribaret girl myself), and would look really awkward as is paired with any of my costume pieces. I'd also just like to have a pair that is a little different than the standard set.
I was wondering if anyone here had any success with customizing lamé wings and if so, what methods and techniques you used.
I was thinking of maybe dip dyeing the bottom edge of metallic silver wings in grey or black to hopefully have a color fade effect, but I have no idea if that would actually work! I also thought that a similar effect could possibly be created with an airbrush.Last edited by Desiree_Cervidae; 03-26-2010 at 01:15 PM. Reason: added accent to the 'e' in lamé for clarity

Ok.. for some reason I first read it as "lame" as in "not good" not lame'... too funny! I'm thinking if they are lame why did you get them. :)
I have heard of someone dipping the edges in glow in the dark paint and dancing with black light but that is really funky.

Yes, I mean the fabric lamé not "lame" as in "of poor quality." :) I know how to make the acute accent on the E on a Mac, but I posted this from a PC and I have no idea how to access those characters! If I figure it out I'll be sure to edit it!
Edit: Okay, I figured out how to add the accent. Hopefully that clarifies things! Unfortunately I cannot change the thread title though.Last edited by Desiree_Cervidae; 03-26-2010 at 01:17 PM.

Re: Customizing Lame Wings
Lame (sorry I can't do the accent mark either!) is a synthetic fiber and won't take dye well. Fabric paint might work, but fabric paint can really change the way a fabric moves and flows. Also, I'd worry that applying a liquid anything to pleated wings might flatten out the pleats. So, my suggestion would be to buy 1/2 yd or so of cheap lame and experiment on that - with paint, dyes etc.
Also, I've seen multi-color lame wings on Ebay, but I think they are made out of multi-color fabric, not decoration applied later.

Yes definitely buy a piece of fabric and try different paints on there. I like the airbrush idea! It could work!
