    Attaching A Body Stocking

OK, so I just purchased my first Sugarpetals stocking, the kind that just covers the belly and hips. How do I best attach it to my bra, so that the back doesn't gap, and it stays up and doesn't roll around? Where's the best place to attach it to the bra?

Thank you from a sewing-challenged dancer.

It's on the Sugar Petals web site: Sugar Petals Dance Accessories Custom Body Stockings

Scroll down to the section titled "How to hold up your new stocking"

Shira - I tried that suggestion, and it's not working...maybe I read the diagram wrong? I thought it was telling me to sew the hooks into the bra where the strap meets the top of the bra cup, but that makes no sense...where am I actually supposed to place it?

    Thanks!

    Re: Attaching A Body Stocking

    I use 5 hooks. Here's where I put mine:

    1. Center front of bra
    2. On each side of bra where the cup meets the back band, about 1/2 to 1 inch above the bottom edge.
    3. In the back, about 1/2 to 1 inch above the lower edge of the band, centered between the edge where the band meets the cup and the center back

It's a real pain to get all those hooked (and then unhooked after I've danced), especially if I'm getting ready without anyone else around to help, but they get the job done.

On the diagram on that page, I think what she intends for you to do is to attach the hooks at the top edge of the bra where the back band meets the cup. Ie, NOT at the strap. I'm thinking that might be easier to get in/out of than the way I do it.

I made straps from flesh coloured elastic to fit under the straps of my bedlah, and it works for me, but my body stocking isn't Sugar petals, so I don't know if it would work for you.

Is it easy to find elastic this color? Where did you get it?

I also use the 5 hooks method that Shira describes. I also have a nude bodystocking that has shoulder straps made of the same mesh and about 3/4" wide. It was made by Halima. Only problem is it is a little big for me, but it is soooo convenient. I often wear vests that cover any of the strap that might show.

I am looking to put straps on more of my belly covers, much easier than sewing hooks on every bra. To that end I purchased clear bra straps at JoAnn's but they weren't long enough to go under the bust and over the shoulders. ,f::

Googling flesh colored elastic didn't yield anything, but I did find this: Stretchrite Clear Elastic, 5 Yards.*: elastic*: sewing & quilting*: Shop | Joann.com

I *had* hooks in mine but couldn't get out of the costume quick enough for back stage changes... so I switched them to snaps. Still sturdy enough to hold in place, but easier to pop myself out.

Thanks for all the tips, everyone! Thanks to you, I managed to get it together in time for my gig tonight (in which I bored a bunch of young young people with my classic Egyptian music, but that's another story). Trying to get out of that thing was pretty hilarious - I felt like the straitjacket act in a sideshow. And I may have dislocated something in my thrashing and swearing.

I found the elastic in the same shop that sells dress material, and also on the haberdashery stall in our local market. I got 1/4" wide, and it doesn't show at all under my other straps.

The body stocking I purchased from Flamenco Diva came with clear straps that can go over your shoulders or convert into a halter. I love it...I'm posting this in case you want to try them in the future.

Thanks for the tip. I found both the ballet elastic and the clear elastic at JoAnn's and I have several existing belly covers that I want to try adding straps to, but I will keep them in mind if I need any in the future.
