eye creams?
I'm trying to get better about preventive skincare and currently use cleanser (currently either Lush coalface or Oleg Henriksen (??) red tea foaming cleanser) and then I'm finishing a tub of Philosophy Hope in a Jar (but probably won't buy again) and using Aveeno daily moisturizer with spf 30 for daytime. I'm not currently using any eye cream but am wondering if maybe it wouldn't be a good idea? I'm 26, so I'd like to try and prevent wrinkles and lines there since I love to play up my eyes with sparkles.
When should one start using eye cream? What brands are recommended? Do you put it on in the morning and the evening or just evening?
Any and all input is very much appreciated!

Re: eye creams?
I had a discussion with a dermo once where she basically said, as long as your moisturizer doesn't have too much (is any) alcohol in it, it's fine. Make sure you use Sunscreen during the day. Better to use a decent store brand and invest in a good eye cream.
I am currently using a brand from Iceland called Skyn. The main thing I like about it is that it comes in a pen which makes it easy to apply. It is $20 per pen, so it's not inexpensive, but there are much more expensive products out there.
I apply it both in the AM and PM.

Re: eye creams?
I'm using one from Olay right now. I'm having a hard time telling if it's doing anything for me or not. I know that the fine lines around my eyes are much less visible when I wake up in the morning, but they are more visible by the end of the day! I use the eye cream morning and night.

Re: eye creams?
Don't Smoke + High SPF Broad Spectrum Sunscreen = Wrinkle Prevention
Period. There is nothing else that causes or prevents wrinkles. The rest is marketing.
"Eye cream" is also a marketing label.
Determine your skin condition and use products (the least number and amount) accordingly. Eat sensibly and manage stress.
I don't mean to sound flippant or overgeneralize but seriously, this is what maintains good skin. Not something from a bottle/jar/compact.

Re: eye creams?
Tahira - interesting. I've actually just been patting some of my normal moisturizer around the eye area...
Azhia - I don't think it sounds flippant at all actually and appreciate the frankness. I really didn't know if it was necessary to purchase a separate product because I couldn't see much difference between ingredients in one and the other.

Re: eye creams?

I am a SUCKER for aesthetics so pretty and attractive packaging draws me in like a magnet. Which is how I know, from experience, that no matter how packaged or priced, it may or may not be effective.
Whatever is good for your entire face is also good for your eyes, is also good for your neck (and should always always always include a sunscreen. Everyday. Never stop. Ever. Start now.).
Whatever I use as a moisturizer (which is anytime I wash my face), I put a little extra around the eyes AND THE MOUTH area. Don't forget the mouth area!

Re: eye creams?
I will throw in that if you are pale sunscreens alone are not enough if you are outside alot. Wear a wide-brimmed hat to shade your face and spf 50 clothing to cover your forearms and chest.
My skin will not tolerate chemical sunblocks (PABA, parsol, padimate-O, etc). so I use mineral sunblocks (only active ingredients listed are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) in combination with hats and clothing.

I'm also a big fan of large sunglasses that block UV rays.

Re: eye creams?
I agree with everything Azhia said and would like to chime in with ... "You, too, women of color!!!!" I know so many women of color, particularly Black women, who think that we don't need sunscreen because of the melanin in our skin. Untrue. I wear sunscreen religiously. I am obsessed.
I always encourage folks to read Paula Begoun's "The Beauty Bible" and "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me". They give invaluable information about what our skin does and does not need and about how a majority of the claims made on makeup/hair/skincare packaging are just bunk.

Double that!
Genetically I am a tropical gal and tan easily, never burn, but I still wear broad-spectrum SPF 50.
Another excellent book is Dr. Ellen Marmur's "Simple Skin Beauty." She is a dermatologist and survivor of the worst kind of skin cancer. So with her and Paula's books, you'll be covered information-wise.

Re: eye creams?
I like Paula's Choice.
Paula researches the literature on ingredient effectiveness, then formulates her own products based on the facts. She also rates existing products.
Here's her take on moisturizers. She says if you have a good general moisturizer you don't need a special one for the eye area.
Moisturizers: State-of-the-Art Quality & Ingredients : Cosmetics Cop: Skin Care & Makeup Tips & Reviews
Some of her sunscreens I don't like, but I have super-sensitive skin.

Re: eye creams?
Azhia is right. Also drink TONS of water - your skin will love you for it.
I'm 37, live at 8300 ft (strong sun rays, very dry air) and just slather Kiss My Face 15 spf daily moisturizer on after I wash with Avalon Organics cleansing gel or St Ives Apricot Scrub. If I am going to be playing outside, I put on Badger 45 spf sunscreen (recently rated one of the top sunscreens that lives up to it's SPF claims AND doesn't have a bunch of cr@p ingredients so it's good for your skin.) I don't go in the sun without good sunglasses either. Then again I am no fan of burned corneas, snow blindness, or squinting.
Inevitably though, if you are living a good life, the smile lines will catch up with you. Darn all that happiness!
