Fair Trade vs. Sweat Shop - what about India?

I am trying to do the right thing when purchasing my belly dance toys, and I am very happy to pay more for items that are produced by properly compensated workers who work under good conditions. I am well aware of the discussion of purchasing costumes from Egypt vs. China. However, I am wondering what to think about India. Leaning towards old-school tribal, many of my things tend to come from there. Can those who know more about the topic share what they know? What do I look for, what are signs of things I should avoid? (Other than the obvious: mass-produced and super-cheap on Ebay --> skip!)

India has a terrible reputation for sweat shops as well.

Some of my tribal-ish jewelry came from 10,000 Villages, which is a fair-trade organization.
