Scrap CDs as Sparklies?
Honest, I did a forum search but nothing came up!
I'm curious if anyone has any experience using old unwanted CDs in costuming. I've been thinking about either hot gluing them on as sparklies or sewing them on like shisha mirrors, but I'm just not sure how it would turn out, if it would even work, and what's cooler.

Just make sure you don't do this:
(I saw this on Tribe.)

I once saw a native american dancer wearing a costume decorated with cds... it was GORGEOUS!! and boy did it sparkle in the sunlight.
The dancer said you need the right tools to work with. He'd cut the cds into triangular pieces, and then drilled tiny holes for sewing. He was extremely proud of the fact it was made out of recycled materials.

Re: Scrap CDs as Sparklies?
There was a tutorial on tribe about cooking the CDs in a microwave and then snipping them into shapes with scissors. They turn a crackly blue color. But the instructions said to use an old or designated microwave for the job - and it smells bed, I tried it once.
This is a different tutorial but the same idea: CD Jewelry » How To | Cut Out + KeepLast edited by dunyah; 04-07-2010 at 10:27 PM.

I have made scarecrows out of them for the garden. Kind of like windchimes.

I once saw an "art car" heading for the Fremont Parade in Seattle. It was made to look like a giant fish. It was completely covered with CDs overlapping like fish scales. It was beautiful!

Oooh, thank you for the links and suggestions! I'm a little hesitant microwaving the CDs since there are so many suggestions to have an extra microwave to do that and I don't have one right now. Durn! Maybe I'll do the boiling thing and just use them extra shiney.

I have a "no stars" review level for my video reviews that suggests that a disk from this level should be used as a "DVD Shisha Mirror", but have never encountered a practical way to create them from same. They're certainly reflective enough!

Re: Scrap CDs as Sparklies?
Definitely will! I have a spindle of CDs I've been hanging onto because I'm way too big of a packrat to just toss them! I'm gonna do some experimenting while the fiance is away to see how they go - I'm thinking of doing maybe some mosaic style trim/embellishments - could be neat?
