    Give Me Some Western Costuming Inspiration - Giddy Up!

    Don't worry, I have no intention to perform cowgirl fusion any time soon ,r:;

    My man and I have been dying to do a crazy Western-style photo shoot together, and I think it would be an insanely fun costuming challenge to create a blinged out cowgirl bedlah for the occasion! I'm thinking lots of turquoise and silver "hardware" on a denim base, and wearing it with blinged-out skinny jeans.

    Anyone want to share some photos of sexy, OTT country-western garb? Feed me! Nom nom nom!

    Not very blingy, but my troupe actually did a western fusion number to "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy. If you go to this link, you'll find a bunch of photos of us with cowboy hats, halter tops and hip scarves with Melodia Pants.

    I saw a kick ass cane dance several years ago, done to a country western tune, dancer wearing harem pants and tunic made of holstein cow fabric, and she used a hoe instead of a cane! It was fun and technically fantastic!

    Check out Arabia Adorned in Calgary, AB Canada; www.bellydance.ca> Arabia Adorned Blog. They usually do a routine for the Calgary Stampede Parade and I saw part of the costume last year, it was very cute. You might find some inspiration on their website. Yee-haw!

    Aw, thanks. We always try to incorporate the rainbow every year.

    Like I said, not too blingy, but maybe it feeds your imagination.

    My immediate thought was lots of chainette fringe!

    OMG....Dita's rhinestone outfit! I want!

    Might be a little pricey to fabricate one of my own, for one photo shoot ,r:;

    My first thought was the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders as belly dancers:

    White Turkish vest with blue sequined star appliques
    blue sequined dance bra
    white dance belt with blue sequined star appliques
    blue chiffon skirt

    The Cowboy cheerleaders don't have fringe, but white chainette fringe could be incorporated as desired.

    Not exactly western, but steam punk:

    Welcome to Facebook

    I think the vest type might work (I used a stretchy browns on browns cordoroy and a trim with little balls on it), and the skirt COULD - I got a sort of light faux suede, and made a circle skirt at top, and then sewed irregular pieces on for a sort of torn up bottom, so it would look like I'd been out galavanting and worn it ragged.

    For one number (I was doing burlesque) I wore it with a corset and then the steam punk adventure outfit came off to reveal a corset, satin bow and front drape, and bright sequinned green bra (the photo), but I also wore it with a heavily antique laced sort of bra and no midsection cover (link)

    Straw cowboy hats can be found.
    Bandannas are cheap @ hobby lobby, etc, and some farm stores
    Tandy Co. has western-style conchos

    Line dancing is adaptable! Have fun!

    And that was a great crowd reaction, too! Are they always that enthused for your annual appearance? I confess, a troupe-mate suggested performing for our local Pride, but I wasn't sure of our reception.

    Yup, they give it up for us every year. It's one of my favorite performances we do. I think we've been dancing there for something like 9 years. I highly recommend performing at Pride events. It gives you great exposure and you never know what other opportunities will grow out of it.

    I don't have a picture, but I saw a video of Jasmin Jahal performing years ago in a blue and red fringe monster with sleeves that had long beaded fringe hanging under the entire length of the arm. Reminded me very heavily of those leather or denim jackets with the fringed sleeves. It struck me as being very western looking.

    I don't have suggestions for Western music, but in terms of a Western style costume-you can contact Hallah Moustafa in Egypt. She used to design embroidery for horse saddles and she does lots of abstract beadwork and embroidery that she can incorporate into her costumes that look both Western and abstract Arabic at the same time. She has designed lots of Western looking costumes for Yasmina for her Farha tour one particular year. She made me an awesome denim jeans costume!!! Its Western in the sense that she used denim and metal!! It has some bling, but not too much because its all about the denim. Contact her if you are interested.

    Ooh, saw this on For the Love of Opera Gloves today:

    Though the opera gloves part of the outfit doesn't really say "cowgirl" to me. But I like the jauntily tilted, shiny cowboy hat.

    Just stumbled on this image of a dancer named Amira:

    I like what she did with the belt. It looks like she just added silver fringe to it.

    Leila from Ukraine has a great vid of cowboy fusion belly dance on her website... check it out (and her other vids, too). Cowboy vid is in 2008 category, I believe.
