Bella doesn't sell through distributors, does she?
My gut feeling is that he sells designer knockoffs ..c::

Re: BELLYSU Costumes on Facebook
Seems fishy.
I was going to start a thread about this one Bellydance clothes Bellysu Costumes | Facebook
He has a gallery full of pictures of Didem, pharaonics, bellas and dancers I somehow feel I recognize from the internet. I would urge people to look through it to see if trhey find someone they know in there.
Wtf, my link says Bellysu also! Perhaps it is the same person who made a group connected to his profile, and I believe there's a fanpage as well.
Edited: testing the link:Dahi costume group | Facebook
Weird stuff! Now long time after the same link says Dahi costume group and before it used to say Bellysu. I didn't do anything to make it say any of that.Last edited by gisela; 06-01-2010 at 01:02 PM. Reason: testing the link

15 days to construct a costume? By slave labor possibly?

Re: BELLYSU Costumes on Facebook
Yeah. looks like he's saying he can copy any of these for what looks like $250 usd. Crazy. I mean the world of fashion is full of knock off's, but showing pics of designer stuff and not really saying that they're just going to copy it is lousy.

This looks like the dancers from "by dancers for dancers".
Bellydance-clothes claims that "we have all these costumes"

Re: BELLYSU Costumes on Facebook
Close- these are the finalists of Belly Dancer of the Year last year.
I had no idea I was modeling for Bellysu at the time! How naive of me. I thought they'd end up on Gilded Serpent or something! I should write him and tell him I expect a cut of whatever he makes from selling my costume he claims to have in his possession. Now that I'm a model and all, I feel it's only fair.

Haha! Yes that is the least they could do for you!
Btw, congratulations on making it to the finals. But I bet that is nothing compared to the glory of appearing in Bellysu's facebook-album

Re: BELLYSU Costumes on Facebook
I went the straight way and asked them directly.
Seems like the costume designer used to work for Bella.
The Facebook-page is set up by her marketing-guy.
I will go and visit their shop in Istanbul in May (by then it should be established).
15 days for a costume is possible. I got one from Legend costumes in a week. (no skirt, but bra and belt with some accessories). Depends on how elaborate it is. And yes, when I went to pick up the costume there were 4 people still sewing it. I waited for an hour while they feverishly stiched pearls and sequins ..l;, No slaves, just normal women doing their job.
I guess it depends on how many costumes they are working on at the same time.

Re: BELLYSU Costumes on Facebook
I´ve added Bellysu to my contacts and ask (like I doesn´t know bella) who are they "because I´ve seen some dancers with that costumes..." And I don´t have response.
I think it´s a copy (if you say Meisson that work for Bella maybe) but I think the costumes don´t have the same quality and are worse ended that bella´s.
And if you´re fashion designer, you must put your own designs not pictures of another designer because you´re saying that you only copy.
Maybe the best thing will be ask Bella directly.

Re: BELLYSU Costumes on Facebook
You constantly have seamstresses and designers leaving Bella, some copying the style better, some not soo well. I saw some costumes at Ender May and at a vendor from my area having costumes you can't tell the difference between Bella and those.
I don't care that much if it is a real Bella or a "copy" if the quality is equal - a seamstress who worked for Bella will still be able to make costumes in similar style and quality when working on her own.
These look very Bella-ish and even copy some of their latest styles but I have to admit some of these costumes are missing the perfection of Bella costumes. What bothers me is that they use pics of Bella costumes to advertise. If they would only show their copies / interpretations of the costumes you clearly see what you can expect from them but using Sandras pics is fishy.Last edited by sha-ri; 04-22-2010 at 03:40 AM.

Re: BELLYSU Costumes on Facebook
I really don't like it when designers copy others outright or seamstresses leave a designer and then go off trying to make their old employer's stuff on their own. I get asked all the time to copy the work of other designers but I just won't do it. I will get inspired by and take elements from but not copy. there are so many cookie cutter costumes out there and as much as I love Bella a lot of her designs all look the same. I sure hope this bellysu person isn't just a rip off from China. That would just be sad.

I flat out commented on her facebook. The main photo isn't her stuff. It's bella's on some of the bay area dancers.

Looking closely at the bras on a few of these, they seem 'off' to me and they aren't even *that* cheap - some of the costumes are $600!

Re: BELLYSU Costumes on Facebook
You can be inspired by some designer, by her or his style, this is ok.
But you can´t put the pictures of other designer and say that it´s your design, you must say, I can copy that.
And obviously don´t sell it at the same price because when you buy a Bella, or another designer costume you´re not only paying a beautyful costume, you´re paying the design, the idea and the name.
I´m fashion designer too and if I want a bella only I must buy fabric and do it but I don´t want to do it because it´s not my idea, if I want a bella or an Eman Zaki I´ll pay their work, because it´s the same I want that they do with my work.
And I forgot to say, if someone buy one of this designs expecting a Bella quality costume, and pays this price and when the package arrives I think they will feel disapointed when see a poor quality costume, and this is bad reputation for Bella (or anyone costume designer)Last edited by CassandreParparim; 04-22-2010 at 03:05 PM. Re: BELLYSU Costumes on Facebook
if it is to advertise for her, why doesn't it have her name on it? mad sketchy IMO.
for the dancers who think it's OK to buy knock offs even when you know it's copied from another designer's work, would you also be OK with taking a choreography workshop from someone who stole the choreography from another dancer and passed it off as their own? or would you care if you came up with an original routine, put in a lot of time and creativity to come up with it, rehearsed it and trained to perform it well, and then someone came along and copied your routine? and performed it for the same audience?
im all for being inspired by other designers and other dancers, but we all know the difference between theft and inspiration and it's no different between costume design or dance, it's still a product of your creativity and innovation and technique.

Re: BELLYSU Costumes on Facebook
Hello all:
I´ve received an message from bellysu today.
I´m not going to do copy-paste but she told me that they´re opening a new shop and a website.
She say too that her partner has worked for Bella for 9 years and do designs for Sandra and Didem.
I don´t know if the pictures of Sandra are her designs under the manegement of Bella.

Re: BELLYSU Costumes on Facebook
I got the same message. But for example the white one is a bella for sure and bellysu's version is nowhere near the quality of the original. Even if she designed it for Bella it seems a little strange and she should very clearly state what is going on with her relationship to the designs. But they do look like poor copies in all honesty.

Re: BELLYSU Costumes on Facebook
Maybe I'm missing something & someone please correct me if i'm wrong or not understanding the bigger picture, but to use a different example just because somene for example is a seamstress for Chanel or Ralph Lauren doesn't mean that they can then open up a shop & copy Chanel or Ralph Lauren's designs. They can of course create their own designs, but shouldn't they then be using their own images & pictures to prove they are their own orginal designs. Just because a business is starting off doesn't make it ok to use others pictures, images, models or anything like that.

Re: BELLYSU Costumes on Facebook
I don't know. If you designed for someone than you learned from them and worked with them and if you go off on your own that's great but every photo and design MUST be original from that point on. You can and should reference your affiliation and history with other designers and you can discuss their influence on your work but I believe you SHOULD NOT ever make a copy or use a photo without permission. Even if you ultimately designed it you did so for another designer presumably with pay.
I personally would not support a business that posted photos of costumes they did not make. I hope bellysu will grace us with some original designs under their name in the future with up close pics, prices and info.
