    Hair Help! Curls from nowhere!

So all of my life my hair has pretty much been straight with one little S wave down the back. But in the last few months I've been washing my hair and letting it air dry and it's now very wavy/very very loosely curly. I don't know what to do with it! Help me!

If I brush or comb my hair it just becomes a giant poofy frizz ball and if I leave it alone the waves have a tendency to go sort of flat and blah. I like the new texture but don't know what to do. I don't put any product in my hair other than leave in conditioner. It's past waist length and very very thick and somewhat coarse.

    Thanks!

Our hair changes texture as we age...I posted a similar thread not too long ago. There were helpful answers! I'm doing a modified version of curly girls, for wavy girls and I love my new look.

Yes - my hair is getting straighter as I get older. When I was a kid it was really kinky. I wish I had some of that texture back.

Do you not want to put any product in your hair? I ask because you might benefit from using a de-frizzing product before brushing it out. I like Frizz Ease Secret Weapon styling cream. When I air-dry my hair, it comes out wavier/curlier than it does when I blow-dry it, and I use that stuff as soon as it is dry, then brush it through my hair. It keeps my hair smooth without getting rid of the body.

My hair has always been poker straight - until about year ago. Now I have waves around my face and if I let it air dry it gets a bit of wave too it. I've always wanted wavy or curly hair but this isnt wavy enough to look good! So now I find I have to blow out my hair straight for it to look decent.

    Cant win, can I? lol

Had you always blow-dried your hair previously? If so, your hair might always have been wavy/curly, but the blow-drying was straightening it out.

If you want to encourage the curl, you should avoid brushing or combing your hair once it's dry. To take out the tangles, run your fingers or a comb through it in the shower while you're conditioning it.

The leave-in conditioner that you're using might be too heavy for your hair and may be contributing to the gradual flattening of the curl that you're seeing over the course of the day. I would try switching to a moisturizing conditioner that you can rinse out before you let your hair dry.

Curls and waves generally benefit from the use of a bit of gel to keep the frizz to a minimum. The Curly Girl/Devachan crowd recommend against products with silicone in them (check the ingredients list for any name that ends in "-cone"). Silicone products are definitely too heavy for my fine curls, and really drag them down, but some of my friends with thicker hair can get away with using them. Scrunch the gel into your hair while it's still wet, then let it air dry. Putting it up while it air dries (with a towel, T-shirt, or hair clips) may also help encourage the curl to do its thing by taking the bulk of the weight off.
