Thread: Melaya for Shorties ??!!?

Hi everyone! I recently heard that there are Melayas out there made for shorter people. Hadia brought one to a workshop a while back and couldn't remember where she got it. Does anyone have any leads on who makes them and where I can find one??

Sorry, I don't. But I thought I'd share this: Faten Salama (who is very petite) dances with half of a melaya. Just cuts it off where the paillettes are in the center and dances with half.

IIRC, she doesn't use the center paillette section, just holds the new blank edge at the top and has the paillettes go around the sides and bottom?

Two petite dancers could go in together and buy a melaya and share it!

Similarly, I folded my meleya in half and sewed it together. It works much better for a shorty like me that way!

That's what I did as well. (I am 5') It does make it less transparent though if that's important to you.

Thanks everyone! I wouldn't have thought to fold or cut one, its a great idea! Just to be sure, do you fold it to make the length shorter or the width?

Ok, good to know! Do you have a trick for wrapping the Melaya around your hips? The center part that hangs always drags on the floor... or do you avoid doing this all together?

I did wrap it around my hips and didn't have problems with the ends dragging, but I wrapped it more around my waist to compensate for my height.

hehe, thanks for posting the pic. I could try around my waist. I trip over it otherwise ..l;, (4'-10 and a half....)
