If lip balm isn't working by itself, you need to exfoliate. You can use a sugar paste - sugar and water, baking soda and water. I usually use sugar and water. I apply it and then rub it in using a really soft toothbrush. When you wipe/rinse it off, your lips feel like butter. Slather on a rich balm afterwards. I do this at least once a week.

I agree with MakedaMaysa, but I would also add that it's a good idea to put some sort of softening balm or even something like almond oil on your lips before you exfoliate, and/or to do it right after a warm shower. Warm water and the balm or oil help soften the dead skin and make it easier to remove with the exfoliating paste.

My lips used to get chapped every winter. Then I started using 100% organic beeswax lip balm -- it was miraculous! I swear by it now and apply it several times a day. Exfoliating gently once a week helps too.

babywipes exfoliate lips very well. don't know why but they work great. fast & gentle.

i like shea butter based lip balms best. organic. no weird stuff. dessert essence makes a good one. also pure coco butter sticks work great.

    Re: chapped lips

My current favorite lip balm is Dr. Bronner's MAGIC Organic Lip Balm (Naked). I've been using it for a few months every night before bed and sometimes during the day and haven't had chapped lips at ALL.

I have also used a soft toothbrush (dry) to gently exfoliate my lips, followed by balm.

    Glad it worked!

I'm a huge lover of the Smith's/Rosebud balms. I always have one on me and one is always on my dresser, next to my bed. I apply it right before bed every night.

    Re: chapped lips

One thing to keep an eye (or lip) on, is what lip products you might be using. Just in case it's a reaction to the actual lip balm product or lipstick, etc. I've had that happen sometimes and after stopping/switching brands, my lips weren't chapped anymore.

Alba Hawaiian lip balms always do the trick for me - so moisturizing, natural, and come in all kinds of yummy tropical scents. I used to get them at the health food store, but I think they even sell them at Walgreens now.

If the rest of your skin is persistently dry, you might want to take an essential fatty acid supplement, like fish oil or flaxseed oil. This will help to keep you moisturized from the inside out!

I totally love organic lipbalms from Badger.

The favorites are Lavender Orange and one cocoa- butter based in Orange flavor, it is great mixture of cocoa butter and orange scents. love, love it.
