    No more cheap makeup EVER!

This weekend I went to a workshop show and of course put on a bit of makeup and some dressier clothing. I had thrown my ELF mascara and eyeshadow in the bag with my Everyday Minerals items. By the time I got done with my makeup the ELF stuff was in the trash bin! The mascara was clumpy and sticky. The eyeshadow seemed wimpy and low on color.

Has anybody else had a "bad cheap makeup" experience? Any brands you'll never buy again?

bare minerals eye shadow, they come in a little pot and when you travel it is a giant mess. TanyaLV took me to Sephora in Vegas and I fell in love with highly pigmented NARS eyeshadow, blush and pressed powder. I still love my bare minerals face power though.

I like some low-cost items, especially pencil liners with a good wax content (not too hard, though - NYX is a favorite brand). I also like plain ol' Cover Girl Waterproof Mascara. Since I often wear false eyelashes, it's good enough!

I gave up on my mineral eye shadows too, though I love my foundation! They certainly are messy for travel.

the Hema makeup seems to be pretty nice, though quite cheap. i have several little pots of sparkly metalic eyemousse and i love it!

on the other hand, last summer i bought a relatively full set (*really* cheap), no-name, of eyeshadows and such. but the colors were really not intense at all once on the skin, showed as pastel instead of bright. since i wanted it for dance, but it wasn't stage-worthy at all, i ended up giving it to my bf's young cousin, she's having a blast with it lol. my loss is her gain...

i give away make up all the time as well, when i realise i wont be using it, better to give it to someone who might use it for daily wear than to keep it in my bag and toss it two years later.

advice: a good primer. i now use the mac paint pots nude on my eyes. then you can get away with cheaper eye shadows on top.

and the hema eyeshadow is you use it WET is really good, and only costs a couple of E.

Oh honey...haven´t tried E.L.F. yet but I´m sorry to hear it wasn´t good!

I´m very fond of Milani,NYX and Viva La Diva...cheapo eyeshadows that save my wallet when MAC is out of the question.

One brand that really disappointed me is (not so cheap) Bare Minerals-it turned out I´m over sensitive to bismuth oxychoride-and I found the brushes scratchy, especially the Kabuki.

I second the need for a primer. Sicne I started using the MAC paintpot, eyeshadow stays in place all day and the colors are more vibrant, even cheaper brands.

I recently tossed my Bodyshop Eyeshimmers because dragging them around in my gigbag turned them into a crumbly mess. I was very happy with those before the crumbling.

Ah, the amount of cheap eyeshadows I have bought in the past that were unable to deliver the results I wanted! Seems like this is the one make-up product that I keep buying, hoping to find the perfect product. Now I want to give the Hema eyeshadow a try too ..g.:

I also wasnt impressed with ELF products.

I do like Avon glimmersticks eyeliners and lipliners though. I use the black for the waterline, and have several of the colors to supplement my good MAC stuff when I want to occasionally use a different color scheme than my normal faves. Other than that though, 90% of my make-up is MAC and I use the Larenim pigments when I want a loose eyecolor.

I usually dont buy cheap makeup. I have build a collection of brand-name makeup and some items last for a long time. I have mostly Dior, Nars, 2 taced, Urban Decay. I prefer to spend 50$ for a Dior palette which will last me 2 years + and be totally happy with it during those 2 years than buy cheapie stuff.

I am also very picky about the stuff I put on my face, I usually use only organic natural skin care with minimum chemical ingrediences and mineral makeup. (Dior and UD shadows and Nars blushes being the exception as they don't go all over the face, I bought those after I got tired from the messiness and unpracticality of loose mineral shadows)

I always worried about ELF brand, how the quality and ingrediences are if the stuff is so cheap. I dont think I would use anything from this brand on my face. I dont want to sound snotty, Im just very carefull about what I use.

As you are asking about which brand I would never buy again, that brand would be Everyday Minerals.

I used to love their stuff, the price was right, i used EDM excusively for about 5 years.

However, recent change in their products, and way their run their customer service made me very dissappointed with their products.

I was also one of the many girls who got reaction from the reformulated EDM foundation, my face was all covered with red bumps and cystic acne and it took me moths to clear that up (I did not have acne for years).

Actually, the only time I had bad experience with makeup or skin products was with the good quality well known brand... weird! ,f::

I once had a allergic reation to Clarins Wonder Longueur mascara (it cost around $28 or $30!) ,m::

L'Oreal issued a mineral mascara called Bare Natural Mineral Mascara. Don't know what happend but it did not sell good in Quebec's areas, probably just a marketing fail. They started selling the leftover stock in Dollorama's dollar stores at $2!

I tried it... WOW! It's one of the best one I ever used. Soft and nourishing, truly black, stay on but easy to take off, I'm in love. I've check the expiration date on the packs and bought 4 or them ..g.:. But of course it will probably be discountinued, unlucky me!

I have given up on buying cheap eye shadow unless I stumble on an excellent product by accident. This is because the pigmentation in them is so low, usually, that they either don't show up on me or just end up making my eyes look smudgy and dirty. It's not like my skin is that dark, either. I think the olive tone of my skin might have something to do with it. It muddies up the color of the eyeshadow unless the pigmentation is strong enough to really hold its own.

Anahit at other Bhuzer's recommendations and good reviews on Amazon and makeup video tutorials I am trying two different 88 color palettes of Coastal Scents eyeshadow. I like the colors of Physicians Formula but it looks weird on my skin and makes my eyes look wrinkly and old (I guess it's creasing?) I have a light olive complexion and the eyeshadow sets I ordered are supposed to be very well pigmented for the money ($20-25 per set) so I'll let you know how well it works when it arrives.

Seconding the recommendation of Milani eyeshadows -- they're really good and you can't beat the drugstore price. I'm also a big fan of the eye makeup from L'Oreal HIP. Their pot liner appears comparable in pigmentation to Stila and (on my skin) has far more staying power than Smashbox. Eyeshadow colors go on rich and true, in my experience.

I love the skincare lines from Boots at Target (new fave: Boots Expert for Sensitive Skin). Boots No. 7 lipsticks, pencils, and blushes are great for daywear, but their shadows don't give much bang for the buck.

that's so weird! I use ELF everyday, and I love it! none of the makeup has smudged or looked like poop or ruined anything. maybe i'm just lucky? I like it as much as my bare Minerals!

i'll never use NYC ever again though.

There was a whole big cause and drama about formula change, I was watching it closely because it was my favorite brand which I was buying since they were tiny ebay seller.

The formula change occured sometimes in November '09 and the new stuff is giving reaction either allergic or acne to soooo many people. They added some new mystical ingredient but a lot of people also speculated they might have changed supplier and use now lower quality ingrediences.

You might want to try order sample before you commit to large size.

I found even better replacement afetr I sampled bunch of companies.

It is small seems like fast growing company called Lucy minerals, they have free shipping and offer samples I got a sample which lasted me for about 3 months of daily use. I highly recommed their foundation, it has amazing coverage and lasting power, way better than EDM ever did.

I found that Loreal mascara on clearance too! I like it for everyday but not dancing because they didn't have the waterproof.

I don't like Bare Minerals because they cause problems with my eyelids. The minerals are not so healthy like they claim in the commercials.

I like Loreal's Hip line, low cost version of some products similar to MAC, like the tubes of paint make great foundation for your eyeshadow.

In my experience, MAC is the best especially for the stage. It stays in place and doesn't wear off.

Re: No more cheap makeup EVER!

I just got a new shipment of Everyday Minerals, and although I haven't had any allergic reactions, I have noticed that the coverage isn't as good as my last batch was. I thought maybe it was just my uneven skintone getting worse or something, but now I think it might be the new formulation. I still like it, I just don't love it as much. I just got an email that they're doing 25 eye shadows (sample size, which last me forever) for $29, but I'm honestly not sure if I'll order. Seems like a no-brainer, but if I don't like the new formulation as well... I haven't tried most of my new eyeshadows that I just got- maybe I'll try them and see how they are.

Thanks for the recommendation on Lucy Minerals- I'll be checking them out. I had a very bad reaction to Larenim (I think that's the name), and one other- can't remember. Also tried The All Natural Face (on Etsy)- really like the colors, but they didn't build up like I wanted and didn't last very long. Fine for going out for a couple hours or something, but not for stage or even for all-day. I liked Bare Minerals, but need something less expensive.

In stead of spending a fortune on bare minerals. I use physicians formula mineral wear(same stuff without bismuth ) 12.99 and sometimes CVS or walgreens has a coupon or sale ,so I get 2-3.00 off, and i their organic line is good too. Should try it . Bare minerals leaves my face heavy and cakey, tossed it out. I use Urban Decay, Mac, Nars, Cargo and believe it or not Wet n Wild eyeshadow. I love Wet N wild eye pencils. They are cheap but work. Mascara I splurge on Dior Show(I just got the purple one) and I also use Maybelline great lash every day and their Stiletto. I like Nars, Mac and cover girl blush I also like the Loreal hip line if I can't get to Sephora.

I also use Avon and mary kay at times.

Nacara is one of the best drugstore brands IMO, especially for women of color (from pale yellow to purple-black). The stuff rocks.

I have really sensitive skin and eyes and I just made a switch over to using only minerals and natural products for my face - and most of the makeup I use is what most people would call cheap! And I don't like the fact that most store-brand makeup out there has more chemicals than you think (Skin Deep: Cosmetic Safety Reviews) even if it's been marked as "natural".

For foundation, finishing powders, blush, and mascara, I use The All Natural Face products (The All Natural Face Cosmetics) and I also swear by their Kabuki brush. If I want liquid foundation or concealer then I use a mixture of my own homemade cold cream and mix it with her powder products.

For eyeshadows, some of my favorite brands are heavenlynaturalbeauty.com, Fyrinnae, Aromaleigh Pure Mineral Makeup | Natural Mineral Cosmetics, and Welcome sugarpill.com. The colors are vibrant and they show up really well on stage especially if you use a primer first. I'm getting a bunch of new stuff in the mail from them and I'll do a review soon! ..g.:

Aromaleigh! I forgot the name, but that's the brand that made me want to claw my own skin off! I had a horribly bad, itchy, painful reaction to them- that was the very 1st mineral line I ever tried, and it made me swear off minerals for a long time- I thought they all would feel like that! I've never been allergic to anything (except the protein in my eyes- long story), and have "kind of" sensitive skin, but not nearly as sensitive as some people. There was something in there (tried several different things- face, blush, eyes- each more than 1 time) that made me react VERY badly.

How do you like All Natural Face? I bought a ton of samples from them and LOVE the colors, but even with a primer, I can't seem to get it to stay on! Haven't tried it in performance, but just for everyday, it seems like after an hour or so, I'm no longer wearing make-up! Any tricks?

cheap stuff i love: - L'Oreal mineral powder foundation! it is perfect, never looks cakey and it immediately makes me look fresher and more alive when i wear it :)
    - Rimmel 100% waterproof mascara. i use it for everyday makeup only, but it doesn't clump and it nicely defines my lashes without making me look like a drag queen.
    - Manhattan eyeshadow primer. it's basically a cheap substitute for MAC's paintpots
    - 17 lipstick ("showcase"). i wear this everyday and it doesn't budge for hours

cheap stuff i hate: - no name brand 5€ eyeshadow. it is litterally INVISIBLE!
    - "lipfinity" long lasting lipgloss. the only thing that is long lasting about it is the flakey line it leaves on the outside of your lips and its horrible smell.
    - body shop organic lights eyeshadow. also invisible and it makes such a mess!
