Color meaning in cultures
Colours In Cultures
Hi all,
We periodically have discussions about the appropriateness of certain costume colors when performing for certain cultures - thought you might like this.

Re: Color meaning in cultures
i wonder who made this chart up. i disagree with a lot of the chinese ones. we don't do orange for anything. mourning is not only white it's blue and green and black too. and the wrongest thing is black for celebration. we don't like black. celebration is red red red red red red red red red and gold.

With the Chinese, seemingly you don't wear green hats because that means that your husband is being cuckolded - apparently the literal translation from the Chinese is to wearing a green hat!
Ok, nothing related to b'dancing...just thought I'd share!

Re: Color meaning in cultures
Because I am a dork, I teased out all the Muslim, African, and Western/American ones. The chart only contains colors that had Muslim & African associations listed.

It definitely is overly simplified (by necessity) and occasionally wrong (for the whole culture, parts of the culture, in certain times, etc.). For instance, yellow = peace in America? I'd say blue is the color of peace (though I only remember hearing that from Catholics...maybe blue = peace is a Catholic thing). But still pretty and kind of interesting.Last edited by Juniper; 05-01-2010 at 06:32 PM.
