Thread: The Costume Making Commandments

I thought this might be fun. What are you costume making commandments? Here are some of mine:

-Thou shalt always buy extra fabric and trim than what thy believeth thy need
-Thou shalt always have at least two means of securing a costume on thy body
-Thou shalt never sew a flesh-tone looking tassel near thy crotch area
-Thou shalt never sew tassels or clusters of fringe near thy nipple area

Who's got a few more to add?

Thou shalt not try to stiffen a bra with hot glue BEFORE sewing on the straps...

Thou shalt always cover a lingerie bra completely so it doesn't look like underwear .w.:

Thou shalt always multiply the amount of time you think you doth need to complete a project thrice.

Thou shalt do penance for each costume thou hast started and failed to finish.

Thou shalt not be seduced by fabric beyond thine ability to work with or design for.

I am guilty of breaking all three of these ..l;,

Thou shall make bra bands and straps that do not stretch - I've broken that on two rare occasions.

thou shalt wear a costume that fits in with the style of dance thy ist presenting (sorry, bad at the fake old english ^_^)

This is the most common sin that I've seen, and it always looks bad.

• Thou shalt not use crassels and assels.
• Remember thy breaks, and keep them holy.
• Thou shalt not hot glue decorations on thy costume.
• Honor thy fingers and do not sew through them!

Thou shalt make a bra that fits thy girls...neither leave gaps nor runneth over.

I just returned from Joann's for another round of fabrics and trims. I was standing at the cutting counter and turned to my oh-so-patient fiance and said "Bellydance costume making commandment #1: Thou shalt buy extra fabric just in case" I wonder what the woman cutting the fabric was thinking....

Thou shalt lift your work from your lap every so often to ensure you aren't sewing your costume to your nightgown ..c::

If we wore opaque tights with our costumes, would it really matter if we had panties on underneath? On top of the tights they will either have a leotard or a tutu with built in trunks. Would you wear panties underneath all that?

Actually, there is a video out there somewhere. I last saw it years ago so it may be long gone, but it spawned the "crassel" jokes. I think the "dancer's" name started with an E? She was a hip hop dancer who threw together a hideous costume and maybe took a class or two and started performing professionally ,m::

Oh, here's another one: Thou shalt not bead anything that looks in any way Phallic on the front of your belt/skirt.

I remember seeing a Turkish costume on Ebay a couple of years ago that looked like it had a flacid penis hanging off the front of the belt. The costume was there for months. I wonder if anyone ended up buying it.

Thanks for the tips though, I am about to attempt my first costume project; I haven't really sewn in over 20 years, (fixing hems and replacing lost buttons doesn't count as sewing in my books), and I have never beaded anything, so this should be interesting. (Especially with four cats who need to be part of the action all the time.) I really appreciated the commandment on not sewing my costume to my night gown, I can see that happening. I did buy extra fabric to make my first skirt and will definitely avoid crassels and nipple tassels!

Keep the commandments coming please, I need all the help I can get!
