Asking the curvy girls for some advice
My teacher is going to place an order at L Rose designs for our troupe costumes. (I hope this does not spoil some sort of surprise or something...)
She is letting us decide the style of the skirt, top and gauntlets.
I am rather curvy and do not know what to do:
Should I ask a skirt with NO slit, a slit until the knee or a higher (mid-thigh) one? I think we are ordering the 'normal' trumpet skirt from L Rose.
Any curvy girl that has any experience with this? What is better?
Also, my arms are rather chubby:
should I order a top with short sleeves or without sleeves? and then ask for some gloves.... ?
For the gauntlets, same problem as above : should I order the full gauntlet glove (that covers 3/4 of my arms) or just cuffs for the upper arm???
..c::
The girls in my class were already getting tired of me asking advice...

Forgot to add : I think it is crushed velvet skirts and stuff that she is going to order.

Re: Asking the curvy girls for some advice
I'm curvy and have a trumpet skirt with a slit up to my knee. I like it on me just fine. For my arms, I prefer to have a choli style with 3/4 sleeves (to the elbow or just slightly above) and no arm bands. I'm not sure if L.Rose does 3/4 sleeves or not.

Re: Asking the curvy girls for some advice
I recommend sleeves rather than gauntlets that go all the way up the upper arm. I have long velvet gauntlets like this that look great . . . in a photo shoot! While actually dancing, they gradually work their way down to my elbows.

Re: Asking the curvy girls for some advice
Ditto on the choli - that's a good choice and I find it very flattering, the elbow length (I think that's what it's called) of LRose is just right.

Re: Asking the curvy girls for some advice
It depends on whether you think your legs are one of your better or worse features. I store lots of weight in my calves, so I go no-slit whenever possible. A friend of mine is an apple shape with long, shapely legs, so she shows those beauties off.
I agree that ¾ sleeves are most flattering for chubby arms. Bra-style tops can also work nicely. What you really don’t want is a top that covers everything but the arms.

Long or three quarter sleeves.
If you like your lower leg why not a split, otherwise non. Trumpet skirts like L Rose's are usually very flattering for curvy girls.

Re: Asking the curvy girls for some advice
Get the deluxe trumpet skirt (more swirl and less tight at the knees) with the slit. You can also ask to have the chiffon modesty panel (triangular piece of fabric added to the slit. Get the U-top with 3/4 sleeves. You can get it with a chiffon sleeve drape to match the modesty panel in the skirt. And don't forget the headband in same fabric as the skirt and U-Top. If you aren't going to wear a bra and belt set with it, get the half top instead of Utop.

Re: Asking the curvy girls for some advice
@ zoe, we're probably getting the deluxe trumpet skirts (defenitely for those who choose not to have a slit) and the material is red glitter twighlight velvet.
i'm going to have to veto any chiffon additions cause of the overal look/unity and for problems if we choose to use the outfits with veil or cane at some point (too many different materials going on then and issues with the sleeves).
@ everybody; personally i'm a little weary about the choli's for the heavier busted? what do you think? i've got a D and really dont like the look on myself, plus the rather naked back is an issue. NO bra is not an option, and the bra's i find with plastic backs, just dont do the job either really. for the last troupe i had a few of the skinnier girls in the choli's and it was very flattering on them. for the bustier i like a little decolletéé!Last edited by artemisia_danst; 05-07-2010 at 10:07 AM.

Get multiple styles and designs. I switch mine around with different tops/sleeve styles depending how adventurous I am feeling that day :)

Re: Asking the curvy girls for some advice
Great, I like the Deluxe Trumpet Skirts best! (Am thinking of ordering one extra ..g.:, if you don't have too much to order already)
And I was not contemplating about anything chiffon, as you can see, I only wrote down the choice you gave us (which I think is the best choice also!), no chiffon
it would be chaos!
Agree with you on the top
I would not feel comfortable, I don't really like the naked back and I need a bra!!
@ everybody : thanks for your insights!!!Last edited by ZoeDeKooning; 05-07-2010 at 11:34 AM.

Re: Asking the curvy girls for some advice
The LRose half-tops have a closed back, and one can wear any bra under them.

Tree-trunk legs and chubby arms here!
I personally like the way that slits just above the knee look. I also think elbow length tops are more flattering on me.

Re: Asking the curvy girls for some advice
I have an L Rose half top I really like. However... if you are going to order sleeves, do give them your upper arm measurement. The first one I got, the sleeves were so tight I couldn't get my arms in them at all. They redid it for me with a drapey sleeve instead (great customer service) but I sure wish I could have gotten the plain 3/4 sleeve the first time through.
If you have a "soft" upper arm like I do, don't get anything (gauntlet, arm band, whatever) that circles that part of the arm. It makes it look a hundred times worse, just emphasized the problem. Instead cover with a sleeve that isn't too tight.

Re: Asking the curvy girls for some advice
one last question : what is the difference between a full pinch and a half pinch with the L Rose tops?

Re: Asking the curvy girls for some advice
looked up the old order (three years ago! time flies), so the one i was wearing in class is a "pinched". (the fabric that is pulled together in the middle of the top). i'm guessing half pinched is pinched together less (so less decolleté?)
