Fabric for Troupe Skirts
We are all different shapes and sizes and we're looking for fabric that not be too stiff and move with us. We're just going to do plain black skirts and tops for a more uniform, clean look. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated because I know next to nothing about fabrics for clothing.

Re: Fabric for Troupe Skirts
Please someone....anyone? I'm looking at all the lovely costumes everyone is making and I'm wanting to know what kind of fabric you use. What drapes and moves well and would look good on qoddess, petite, and everyone inbetween?

Why dont' you tell us what kind of skirt you'll be making -- circle skirts, straight skirts, trumpet skirts, tiered "gypsy" skirts?

Re: Fabric for Troupe Skirts
I like silkessence from Joann's for circle skirts- lightweight, lots of colors, pretty & CHEAP (so it's okay to do 6 yards...)
I do the $6/yard stretch panne velvet from Joann's for trumpet or mermaid skirts- again, flows well, lots of colors & cheap- since cheap is what we generally need when outfitting a whole crew
If price isn't as much of a concern, check out some of the awesome stretch fabrics at spandexworld.com
both circle skirts & trumpet skirts look good on a wide range of body types
If you're looking at the tribal style tiered skirts & haven't done much sewing before, just shell out the $60-$80 and buy them- don't torture yourself with that project when you're learning to sew!

Re: Fabric for Troupe Skirts
Our first troupe skirts were pure silk charmeuse (20mm weight) and the investment has paid off a hundred times in beauty and comfort of wear. The drape sets the standard and therefore is as flattering as possible to all shapes and sizes.
Silkessence is 1/4 - 1/2 the price, but it is more difficult to sew and less comfortable to wear. I often use it for tiered skirts and pants for the apprentice troupe members.Last edited by maurazebra; 05-10-2010 at 01:25 PM.

I wanted to bump this thread back up and thank everyone for the great suggestions! I'll post pictures once we make a decision and the costumes are finished.
