Thread: How much fabric do I need?

I want to make a skirt and bra but I don't know how much spandex fabric to purchase for a flared size 16 skirt. The fabric is 60" width. I'm thinking 4 yards will do it. Do I need more?

It's hard to tell. How much flare, and how many pieces to the skirt (panels)?

Can you do a mock layout of your skirt pattern, and measure it from there?

A flare like your basic Sahar skirt. That's a good Idea. I'm working from a chiffon skirt pattern and the pattern for that skirt calls for 5 yards. Of course I would modify that pattern.

wasn't there a thread that revealed the secret of the sahar skirt? can't find it. wasn't it a giant 1/2 circle cut on the bias or something like that?

Oh! I love Sahar skirts!

I know someone had uploaded pictures of their skirt pattern on the floor, but I can't find that thread now. (Ozma maybe?) There's this thread talking about a fuller skirt http://www.bhuz.com/forum/belly-danc...-bra-made.html, particularly here http://www.bhuz.com/forum/130055-post85.html. I also found this tutorial, which would have to be modified, but might give some insight How to make a bias cut skirt with wide stretch waistband. You should be able to find home sewing patterns for bias skirts that you could tweak or use for rough yardage estimates, too--look in the bridal/prom section of the pattern books.
