Turning a Veil into Skirt?? or arm band???

Hi Ladies, okay, I always have ideas, but I am NOT a sewer by any means.

Is there anyway to take your average chiffon veil and turn it into a skirt?

If yes, what kind of skirt, circle?

More importanly, how in the world would you go about this?

    Thoughts, ideas, suggestions?

    Thanks.

    EDIT - rectangular veil, approx 3-3.5 yards x 45"

if not into a skirt, how would you go about making arm bands?

How long is it? 3 yrds? 4? Depending on length and width, you could probably get at least a 1/2 circle skirt out of it...

If it's a rectangle (at least 3 yards); you might be able to make a two panel straight skirt (larger panel in the back, than the front).
I'll see if I can find the instructions for you, but I'm not sure where my belly dance books are at the moment.
(It would be in "The Complete Belly Dancer Book")

I would guess this wouldn't work unless the person was very short and thin, because you'd have to cut out a fairly big half circle from the top to accomodate the hip measurement (generally you have 2-3 half circles that can add up to the hip measurement). This would probably leave the skirt too short.

My general feeling is that you probably can't make a very interesting skirt out of a veil. True you could make a panel skirt but that would never be my choice of skirt to make or buy.

Depends on the width, too. If you have veils like mine that are at least 3 yards and about 45 inches wide, you could make a .75 circle skirt. Depends on your measurements and the measurements of the veil, though.

might not make a circle skirt...
but you could certainly make a cute accent skirt for overtop another piece. maybe matching arm drapes.

let's say rectangular veil, approx 3-3.5 yards x 45" as most seem to be about that

A skirt topper would be nice, maybe like this: Ask the Belly Dance Costume Goddess: Making a Handkerchief Skirt

Sorry, I haven't found the book yet, but basically it was 1/3 for the front panel, 2/3 for the back panel.
    (panels are rectangles)
    I'll keep looking for it.

You could make one half circle... so not viable for a whole skirt, but you could do that one half circle, cut it into two pieces, and then you'd have a nice front and back panel that you could put over another full circle skirt... it looks prettier than rectangular panels. You could also cut the rectangle in half, cut a hole in the middle of each piece, and turn it into an 8 pt over skirt. You can also cut a bunch of long, almost triangular strips and make it into a petal skirt... using some of the extra as petal arm bands.
