troupe veil color question
My troupe is going to do a veil piece and I need some help figuring out what color to make the veils.
They wear a black choli top and a black hip scarf with gold coins over different colored skirts. They have plum, pink, red, blue, green and turquoise.
Here is what we look like:
Kanz Al Sahara
I was going to dye each silk half circle veil the color of their skirt with a gold band around the curved edge, but am now realizing how much work that is going to be.
Any ideas from you creative ladies? It would be hard to dye a veil black and since it is a blackstage, I want the veils to pop. all gold?
Thanks:)Last edited by crystalllized; 12-28-2010 at 06:11 PM. Reason: url

Re: troupe veil color question
How about all a cream or pale gold colour?

Re: troupe veil color question
I like the idea of all gold, but what about gold veils with just a bit of their skirt color overdyed in a scrunched tye dye? IE, mostly gold with a little pink, or a little blue, etc.

What about tie dyed? You could use the plum, pink, reds for 1/2 and then blues, turquoise, and greens for the other 1/2. I guess that would be just as much work, but it would look cool.

Re: troupe veil color question
You could dye them in solid colors but have the girl with the pink skirt use the green veil, etc. Mix them up. Or even solid color with the same color skirt would look nice.
Edited to add: I just noticed you said plum, though the plum isn't pictured. The green and plum could exchange solid color veils, i.e. the plum skirt with a green veil, the green skirt with a plum veil; the pink and red could exchange and the two blues. That would be very colorful.Last edited by dunyah; 05-23-2010 at 04:45 PM.

All gold would be pretty too or half of the veils gold and half another color, even white might look nice.

Re: troupe veil color question
I love this! I think it's much less work than the original idea, because instead of dying each veil separately in two different dye baths, there are two groups of tie dyed veils. You only have to do two batches, instead of preparing six different dye pots for the individual veils. Especially if you use a no-stress all over tie dye effects, like the crystalline patterns, versus a pattern where you have to worry about getting the stripes in the right place or whatever.

Re: troupe veil color question
All gold would work. or to play with Jes's idea, white with an edge of colour so that they are really visable on the black stage. This would be less work in the end.

Re: troupe veil color question
I think it's difficult to get a metallic sort of gold color on a fabric -- it seems like it always comes out sort of dim harvest gold or dull greenish yellow.
I think a brilliant sunshiney lemon yellow with a white edge would be EXTRAORDINARY and go with everything. It would POP in the sunshine or against a dark backdrop -- and only one dye bath for everyone.

Re: troupe veil color question
My troupe leader was just talking about the "funerary" veil dance that a group did years ago... which was done with all black veils. Not a very complimentary viewpoint. But having a colored edge to relieve the darkness could be well done.
The all gold would be really nice, or the tie-dye option sounds like a good compromise if you want color!

Re: troupe veil color question
Although I envision the black veil with an edge of color as my ideal goal, only one dye bath would be awesome! I would have to make and match colors with 7 different skirt colors and I am not sure if I have all the dyes or time to do it. Show is on June 26th, but I am super busy as it is!
I think I also have to take into account that I am a super-newb with veil dying and have only done it one or two times a year ago. LOL
hmmmm... still thinking.
I really appreciate all the awesome ideas!

Re: troupe veil color question
For a visual idea of black with a colour border, chec out Jes's website. both Gothica and Black Magic are good examples.

Re: troupe veil color question
i wouldnt go with black, not even with a colour border... that would be too much black.
i'd go with solid veils matching the colour of the skirts

Re: troupe veil color question
I wouldn't go with black, too much black, & ya funerary :-). If you are new to dying, I say keep it simple. Tie-dying to me looks amateurish if not done properly. I am with Lauren, a super bright yellow, "gold" or beigy colors can dye up very lackluster.
