False eyelashes - a few questions
Halloween is my favorite holiday, so I love to troll the Halloween sections at my favorite stores. I keep seeing lots of fun-looking false eyelashes, and I'm wondering, are these eyelashes just as suitable for dance costuming as the more expensive lashes you can buy at Sally Beauty Supply or makeup counters? Or do you really get what you pay for, and ought to splurge on the more expensive ones?
Another question: I have horribly sensitive eyes. So sensitive, that I can't wear mascara and can only wear mineral makeup for shadow and liner. Is there any way I could get away with wearing false eyelashes without suffering from eye irritation? Every eyelash adhesive I've ever seen has has formaldehyde in it, and that's not something I want to put near my eyes!
Thanks, all!

Duo brand adhesive doesn't list formaldehyde, unless it's as "Formalin Solution." Hmmm. If so, that's a little sneaky.
I know some lashes come self-adhesive style that might be good for one use, but they probably contain the same stuff! ..c::

Great place to get lashes - I'm a lash fanatic!
And I do wear the weird ones, if they match my costume. Usually I stick with the wild ones that have some black strips in them and some color, but the solid navy blue or royal purple can look elegant if you can find some black mascara that works for you that you can sweep on your natural lashes under the colored ones.

ssipes is correct. i just looked it up too.
i wonder if you could use some thinly cut toupee tape or double sided dress tape?
maybe consider eyelash extensions because the glue goes on the lashes and doesn't touch the skin?

I just breezed over the ingredients when I bought it, but never thought "hmmm, I'm going to put formaldehyde right next to my eyeballs." Interesting. I now have a pinguecula (benign growth on the white of my eye) that's emerged since I've been dancing.

We need an all-natural eyelash glue. Wonder if BareMinerals would make an adhesive if enough people asked... ;)

Girl after my own heart!..l;, I order jumbo boxes of eyelashes from madame madeline, it keeps me stocked for a few months since I wear 2 pair at a time, 5 nights a week!, My favorites are the ardell fashion lashes, and their gypsy line has some cool shapes too. As for glue, I'm not sure what to tell you, the double sided tape sounds like it might work. Can you wear the lashes if you put a heavy base of eyeliner on your eyes first before attaching the lashes? Might act as a protective layer, that's what I do, liquid eyeliner, let it dry, then attach my lashes.

Just glue those lashes on good! A friend of mine recently lost a lash during a performance and it lay there on the stage like a caterpillar - hee hee!

i guess it is in all lash adhesives?!?!
nasila, you are right about the need for all natural adhesive.
maybe bhuz should start an on line petition to encourage a manufacturer to start working on one.
i bet all kinds of performers organizations, dance studios, modeling agencies, etc. would get behind it. maybe even sag
what do you all think?

Has anyone tried using the Eye Kandy liquid sugar to affix eyelashes? I know it's got the ability to keep glitter on the eye, but I wonder if it's got the right kind of sticky for false eyelashes.
And yes, I agree that Bare Minerals should make an eyelash adhesive! That's the only makeup I use. :)

OK, so I wrote an e-mail to Bare Minerals, telling them it'd be great if they could make an eyelash adhesive, or eyelashes with adhesive on them, that didn't contain formaldehyde. Part of the e-mail I received back from them said this:
"As for the false lashes we do not carry any, hopefully in the near future we will come out with some that are free of formaldehyde. We are sorry for any inconvenience."
So at least somebody read my letter... A girl can hope! Thanks, all, for your responses to my question.

No, you can wear them until they don't look good anymore. Mine usually last 2-3 wears when I use mascara over them (if you do this, wash them after and place them exactly how you want them to air dry).
The Target ones (Sonia brand, I think) last like 5-6 wearings for me.

I wear them for *months* (weekly for about 3 months), I take super care to put on the minimum amount of glue (plus I peal the glue off if I can). I never put Mascara on top. They key is to put them straight back into the box when you have finished with them, do not put them in your pocket, a bag, a papercup or leave them on the side of the sink. Clean them if you can, and put them straight away.

Re: False eyelashes - a few questions
I want to revive this false eyelashes discussion with a couple of questions:
What is the best way to remove all of the lash adhesive from your eyes?
Does anyone else experience this? When performing a 20 min. set in a smoky environment (restaurant with hookahs), my false eyelashes have been sliding up my eyelids. My face gets a little sweaty by the end of the 20 min. and I do have heavy lids, so those two factors come into play.

Re: False eyelashes - a few questions
I just want to know the magic trick of putting the damn things on...I got some self adhesive to practise with...bloink...right into the sink. Numerous times. I finally just gave up.

Re: False eyelashes - a few questions
I don't think the self-adhesive ones are very good. I think you have to use lash glue.
First, you have to try the lashes on and, if necessary, trim them to fit better. I usually have to snip a bit off at the inner corner.
I put a tiny dot of glue on the back of my left hand and drag the lashes through that... the trick, for me, is to think about putting the glue along the *bottom* of the lash strip edge, rather than on the edge itself. So the lashes are being glued to your own lashes a little, in addition to the eyelid skin.
After dragging the lashes through the glue, hold them, blow on the glue, let it get tacky for about 30 seconds. Then position the lashes -- I like to start at the center and work out to the edges. Using two Q-tips (one in each hand) and pushing down & out from the center of the eye to the corners helps me seal the lashes down and gets rid of excess glue, but I don't always do that step. I like the lashes with the invisible strip.
By the way, I just got a great deal here: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Andrea-Modlash-Contains-human-Lashes/dp/B000JFKZN8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1202594909&sr=8-1]Amazon.com: (Pack of 4) Andrea Modlash Faux Cils Contains one pair of 100% human hair Lashes: Health & Personal Care[/ame]
and spotted another great deal here: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/MODEL-21-Lashes-False-Eyelashes/dp/B000KWT3LA/ref=pd_bbs_8?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1202594795&sr=8-8]Amazon.com: MODEL 21 Lashes False Fake No.14, 10 or 27 Eyelashes 10 Pairs: Health & Personal Care[/ame]
Right now I'm experimenting with Fiberwig mascara, it really is like lash extensions you paint on!! I'll report on it more later.

Re: False eyelashes - a few questions
I use individual lashes...they look more natural and I think they're easier to apply. You use tweezers to place each cluster on your lashline

Re: False eyelashes - a few questions
Here is a tip for those who have trouble putting on lashes. I cut them and use the outside quarter or half and don't use the whole strip; then I add my mascara to my own lashes (I use Sue Devits Black Widow -- probably partially because of the name, but it is great buildable mascara). This method doesn't give the cool "caterpillar showgirl" look, but they do give you a wide open doe-eyed fluttery look, and look a lot less like falsies. They are much easier to put on because you don't really have to deal with the eyelid curve (I guess). I have to second the tip about letting the smudge of glue dry for 30 secs, it really helps. Let me tell you, my lashes do not budge. I've also used the individual lashes with duo adhesive if I am going to do shows several nights in a row. These also look really good, but it takes a little more time and I usually let them fall off on their own because I hate the remover. Oh, and I read somewhere you are supposed to put on lashes before the eye makeup, I always did it backwards before this and screwed up my eyeliner, etc.

Re: False eyelashes - a few questions
Yissss...thank you for the Madame Madeline URL!
And the formaldehyde info. Yeesh! I was just about to mention the eye kandy liquid sugar. Haven't tried it but maybe I'll give it a shot in my next shoot and see how it works.
Like jetgirl I also used to cut my full set into sections and then apply the outer 3 sections (to get the full look if I wanted, or just the 1st outer section for less lash). Much easier to apply than the full until you get the swing of the full set.
What also helps is to raise your eyebrow when you're applying the eye lashes. This stretches the skin so you can get it as close to the base of your eyelashes as possible.
You can also use the small tip of a makeup brush to hold it in place while it dries (and as mentioned, let the glue get tacky before applying). If I use anything linty around my eyes, it just gets in my eyes so I can't use the cotton swabs to hold it down.
Use any oil-based eye makeup remover for the chunky glue bits. Even almond oil works well.
I've also read somewhere about applying eyelashes first. I think it depends on the application.
There are cheapy and yicky brands out there. Ardell and the professional lines make the good ones. They maintain a curved shape so you pretty much bring it to the eye and stick it in. lol
The cheapy ones do not and are SO difficult to put on! You can also coax the curved shape by, as suggested above, putting immediately back in container after use (I've used some of mine for over a year and just remove the glue bits). You can also "slinky" them a few times before putting to your eye [hold the ends with your fingers close together and arch them, wiggle back and forth, up and down in the arch shape].
ALSO, curl your eyelashes (with either the "glaucoma test contraption" or the amazing sectioned eyelash curler) and apply mascara to your real lashes before applying falsies.

Re: False eyelashes - a few questions
If you have decent eyelashes, you can skip the fake ones. Buy one tube of the 2-step lengthening mascara and one tube of the 2-step "fattening" mascara (I use the Max Factor ones). Put on a coat of the lengthening primer, then a coat of the fattening primer, then a coat of one of the mascaras.

What brand of adhesive works best? My lashes seem to lift after wearing awhile. I use the glue that comes in the pack. Thanks.

Re: False eyelashes - a few questions
Any one know of adhesive that is latex free? I have tried the revlon self sticks but seem to have difficulty getting them to stay on. I would love to try some that are not pre glued but can't find an adhesive with no latex!

Re: False eyelashes - a few questions
I use DUO adhesive, it's waterproof and works great, I've worn my lashes for 14 hours at a time with no problem. The important thing is to cut down the lashes to fit the length of your eyes, if they are too long they will lift in the corner by your nose. So I don't put them too close to the tear duct, once the glue is tacky i just push the center down on my eye lid, and then use tweezers to hold down the corners for a few seconds, I agree don't use q-tips, the fuzzy will get stuck in your lash and end up in your eye which hurts like hell!!
I also like the lashes after I've worn them a few times, even though I pull of the glue after wearing them, there is a little residual that stays and makes a thicker ridge that mounts to your eyelid more securely.
