Costumes for cold and foul weather...
It's mid-June. The sun should be shining. The birds should be singing. Today is another outdoor festival in Colorado - the Rhubarb festival - and it's almost time to get ready!
Instead of slathering on sunscreen, I am digging to find something warm - anything warm. You see it's 38. And drizzling.
I've pulled out a velvet choli like-top, some flare-bottom dance pants, and a full skirt to go over the pants. Instead of wearing the feather weight cover up that I JUST FINISHED for the occasion (including beading the entire neck line,) I'll put on my warm polyester beladi dress type cover up...
What do you wear when the weather gets yucky on you?

well, we be crazy and actually plan to dance in the snow once a year- body stocking, poly-chiffon bloomers, cotton 25 yard skirt, contrasting poly-chiffon skirt, bra & belt set, long sleeve vest with arm warmers & a pair of jazz shoes big enough to accomodate the wool socks. sometimes matching gloves & we dance next to the warm up hut.

Lara - that sounds like something they'd do in the mountains... you don't happen to be from Colorado do you?

Liquid metal Saidi dress over harem pants (tights under those) and a thick t-shirt (cami under). Not quite toasty, and rather damp as it was raining, but enough to get by for a few hours!

Velvet beledi dress with either tights or harems underneath. Of course, this don't happen often in SoCal.

Re: Costumes for cold and foul weather...
ghawazee coat.
Last fall I did a ren fest on a freezing cold and windy weekend. My winter sports baselayer went under my pantaloons and the ghawazee coat.

I second the ghawazee coat. I made one out of this really thick upholstery fabric, made it long too. It was really warm, but I think I'm going to make another one and line it for those extra cold performances.
Layers, layers, layers!

Re: Costumes for cold and foul weather...

This is a photo of the Arctic Angels, formerly known as the Desert Angels.
Last year, it was so cold at our annual performance at a local Renaissance festival in early October. Our troupe costume was supposed to be harem pants, 25-yard skirt, plus a bedlah. It was too cold, so most of us added shirts or ghawazee jackets. We also wore our winter coats between sets. I had leg warmers on under my pants, plus gauntlets.
Turbans are a great idea too. I danced in homecoming parade in November and it was so cold we could see our breath. I wore tights, harem pants, skirt, long sleeve shirt, sparkly tank top, vest, hip scarf, gloves, turban, leather gloves with thinsulate, and winter boots!

da Sage - aaaah, that makes sense. Actually my polyester coverup is from an Alaskan dancer so maybe that is why it's so warm?? I also wore a gypsy style scarf on my head (everyone loved it) and was fine so long as I was moving.
I maybe should consider a Gawazee dress for weather emergencies. I love how they look!

Re: Costumes for cold and foul weather...
a couple photos from our crew at the ice art:
& I like my 'ghawazee' coat (what I used to call ghawazee coat is now being called a beledi dress on dahlal) for cold wet summer days- it is made out of 'swim suit' fabric after all.

Re: Costumes for cold and foul weather...
Yeow! That's why I am happy to visit Colorado but not live there!
When I have to dance outside in icky weather, I wear nice Melodia-esque pants with my bedleh, tall heeled boots so I can wear my SMartwool socks and thingies on my arms. Of course I bundle up when I am not performing but if I feel like if I get too layered when I am dancing, I'll sweat and then freeze which is so gross...
