Recreating Amani's vintage overskirt o' fringe

After watching this old clip Norma posted in the drum solo thread, I am seriously wanting a long, retro, wall-of-fringe belt. Ages ago, I used to have data that someone uploaded onto the MEDlist about how many ounces of beads you needed to make your own fringe, but I can't find the file today. Hand-stringing insanity aside, does anyone have an estimate for how many ounces a yard of 10" long seed-bead fringe would take?

I've never strung my own fringe but I think you can by fringe that long.

Scheherezade carries as 4", 8", and 12". Dahlal carries 4" and 8". Turquoise has 3", 4", 8", and 12, and one style of patterned 6". None of them had 10" (or for that matter 2" which went through a brief wave of popularity right before the Lycra minimalist costumes took off).

Lots. I know that wasn't helpful but my style is more buy a whole lot and when you run out, get more. I know that when I made just 5 or 6 inch fringe I went back to the store more times then I care to remember.

I have a meter of 6" fringe here at home. I weighed it and it weighs one pound plus 3 ounces. You can do the math from there to figure out how much you'd need for the lenght and width you want.

King of the Nile will make you anything from 3" to 9" according to their web site. I order alot of my fringe from Yaz. He's fantastic. He might even be willing to custom make you a 10" length if you ask him. He's usually very quick even with custom orders.

Thanks--that at least gives a ballpark figure. If the ratios are equivalent, a meter of 10" should weigh two pounds. Some of that weight is thread, but you'd want extra beads anyway to make up for defectives and narrow holes...plus additional beads for the sequins on the bra and belt foundations...

No insight on bead metrics, here. In fact, I just acquired an old fringemonster from a friend and removed (no joke) about 20 lbs. of prefab 13" fringe from the belt. (It had these looped swags that went all the way down each leg). The belt still has a good, solid 10" of retro fringey goodness, but no longer looks like a sniper's ghillee suit.

Nice to see an example of how to style this type of bedlah, though. I love the satin skirt, heels and half-updo.

And if you find any of that 2" fringe in your travels, please let me know!

Wow. I used to make my own fringe, and I hated it. I probably would have found it less painful if I would have known what a bead spinner was at the time.

I've custom ordered fringe through Scheherezade before. If you don't have the time or patience to string your own, you could look into this.
