when choosing colors for separates?
When choosing separates (bra/belt, skirts, veils, etc) do you try to buy items that will match up with other items? Do you tend to stay in the same color family? Do you buy gold sets because they go with everything, and then a variety of skirt and veil colors, kind of thing..or do you prefer to buy a costume in one color that you really like?
I just got an email from a dancer pointing out that I dye veils so that they go with many costumes:
"I got the veil today and it is BEAUTIFUL. I have to tell you that I had been waiting for a veil that would work with several costumes instead of buying a special veil for each one. I'm a veil fanatic but you wouldn't know it from how choosy I am when buying. I saw this veil and just knew it would work. It does work with the costumes I had hoped it would work with...PLUS a couple others that hadn't bargained for!"
my response:
As a dancer myself I am familiar with the costume colors offered by the top designers, I have seen (and owned) them in person so I have a good idea on how to design veils that will go with many colors of costumes. And I've noticed over the years that those of us who like one color are often drawn to the other colors in the veil so it works out really well..thank you :)
Just wondering, do you keep this in mind when you are purchasing costume parts and separates?

Re: when choosing colors for separates?
I mix and match as much as I can! My favorite veil is your merkaba half circle because it can go with blue, red and gold costumes!
I don't normally buy single color veils unless they come with the costume or I make them.
If I didn't do restaurant work, I probably wouldn't care as much, but 2-3 sets a night with costume changes means I need some variety.

Re: when choosing colors for separates?
I try to go with bra/belt sets that will match as many different colors as possible -- I have a couple of variations on gold (beads, coins, loops) and a black/white one right now, a white/gold was the other most versatile one I've ever owned.
Then I go for skirts/sleeves/headbands in strong colors. Bright red, lime green, white, black, hot pink. I can mix/match everything! Right now I'm getting excited about layering old-fashioned chiffon skirts (lime and turquoise, for instance, or turquoise and white) to get even more different looks.
My pet peeve has always been the lack of accessories to go with skirts. It's just not a complete look to me without some kind of sleeves/armband and headband to match. Outside of hte $200 Phraonics sets and L. Rose, NO one seems to offer sleeves and accessories to match their skirts! I'm about to order L. Rose U-tops, gauntlets and headbands in a variety of colors.
And my new Sunrise Merkaba will go with my red, hot pink, sunny yellow AND purple skirts, thank you very much!
I <3 you, Jes, and all my Akai veils!

Re: when choosing colors for separates?
i like to go with colors that match my costumes but ones that have an extra kick of color around the rim so that the veil will match something else i have....(if that makes sense)
although i do tend to stray towards anything blue or red. simply because those are the costumes i wear most.
but i love the eye catching color opposites - like lime green with hot pink. that kind of veil would work with either color costume.
sorry if i'm not making much sense....long day....

Re: when choosing colors for separates?
I do have a lot of mix and match pieces in my earthy-aesthetic costumes. I have a bunch of bits made with the same fabric or that go with that fabric. Then, I can change tops, belts, skirts, and shirts without too much trouble. I don't think I've worn the exact same Tribal costume twice.
My sparkly costumes are another story. I try to make at least two skirts to go with bedlahs so I can change the look, but I am more limited in changing the colors of skirts. I have thought of wearing a complimentary color with a top and belt set though, but I haven't had a chance to try it yet.
