short-sleeved baladi dresses and other opinions sought
Anyone know where to get one? I really like how they look more than the kind with the long sleeves.
Otherwise I'm thinking of ordering a straight-skirted baladi dress from L. Rose with short sleeves, and seeing if they'll sell me some extra yardage to make a hip wrap and a headscarf.
Other opinions sought are - does vertical white/black striped material look good on a tall girl with hips? Or only on slender ladies?

L Rose tank-version beladi dresses show underboob on me. I think you'd look great in vertical stripes, maybe smaller stripes if you feel a little questionable on it on you?

I am not sure that she would sell extra yardage but she does have a variety of hip wraps you can order.
Dahlal sometimes has short sleeved baladi dresses. But I think its hit or miss.

Re: short-sleeved baladi dresses and other opinions sought
I ordered a baladi dress with head scarf from LRose. I basically gave her the measurements for the head scarf and they made it. They will also do the hip scarf. No need to do it yourself, it's not that expensive.
I then had the boarders crocheted with beads the Egyptian way by a woman here who is married to an Egyptian and knows the technique:

(Yes, I am over doing stuff myself - if I can find somebody else to do it for me ..l;,)

Vertical stripes can be very slimming, but you'd have to be sure that the dress is cut right. If the dress stretches more in some places than others, you might have the unfortunate effect of wavy stripes! But if it's cut right, those stripes should have about the same amount of stretch all the way down their length.

I just took some black and white fabric (a lot of it) to the thrift shop. In theory, I thought it was fabulous. Every one who saw it called me "The Belly Dance Referee". After that, I just couldn't do it. I was going to make a Ghawazee coat with a bright yellow under tunic and yellow accents at the sleeves. The stripes were about one inch wide.

Yes, a thinner stripe would be better. I was trying to recreate a costume in a French Orientalist painting, but out of the context of the piece of art, I looked as though I needed a whistle on a rope.

Foo- now I want a referee dress! (Lord knows we need one 'round here sometimes!)
It would go great with my friend's hockey stick/cane dance!
Sorry- I'll be good now. I second the L Rose recommendations.

I do have a black one with short cuffed sleeves. It has silver pinstripes and I sewed tiny hundreds of tiny rhinestones on the shoulders, kind of dripping down the front. I really prefer the look of the short sleeves as well as the pushed up 3/4 sleeve, it looks a lot more..."real".

Anala, dearest, I would very much love to see pics of your sparkly black and silver. I want one like that!
I like an elbow-length sleeve or shorter, though not too short on my meaty arms. Shareen al-Safy has a really pretty green one with rhinestone pinstripes that I remember as short-sleeved. Maybe someone will post a pic -- it's fab.
