would a circle skirt look ok with the sides sewn closed?

    or would it hang funny?

I'd like to try sewing the sides together to wear a pretty silk skirt on the beach avenue..but with the dimensions would it be uneven along the bottom?

anyone know where to find a simple pattern..i don't want the skirt to be skimpy on silk but tiered skirts cost a LOT to make so I'm looking for an alternative..maybe something like those lyrical skirts? those are full circle aren't they?

I always wear my Akai skirts with the splits sewn closed, and to me, that looks great.

I wouldn't think it would be any weirder than sewing five half-circles as two and three with splits. If you've been careful about cutting and sewing, and you've given fabric that stretches on the bias time to hang before evening up and hemming, it should be fine. Those extremely full ballroom skirts are sewn continuously shut.

ahh one of my "one of these days" projects is to work with ballroom dress designers and dye the silk, and then they turn it into some swirling magic..

I honestly don't know - whatever skirt you have been making over the years I probably have somewhere in my costume closet ;-) I just sew up all skirts with open legs, because the peekaboo look is just not flattering for me. I have never found that the surgery looks bad in any way.

A lyrical skirt is a normal three half-circle skirt with the seams closed. There is nothing fancy involved in making one. You make a normal circle and a half skirt and sew the front panel to the back one. It is exactly the same. All your supplier has to do is charge for two more seams.

Re: would a circle skirt look ok with the sides sewn closed?

After checking out the skirts in my closet, I've discovered that approximately half are sewn fully, while half have a single slit. My skirts range from full circle to double circle. There doesn't seem to be any difference in flow and movement -- excepting, of course, that the slit allows the underskirt or my legs to be seen.

actually it would seem she should charge less because she doesn't have to hem the sides where the slits are..

i really need to learn to sew *sigh* not gonna happen ..g.:

The idea of *you* threading a serger makes me giggle ;-) Somehow, visions of Lucy in the candy production line seem to come to my mind when I think of Jes sewing ;-) ;-)

Since the sides are probably on the straight of the grain (maybe even including the selvage) they would be the only part of circle that could be counted on NOT to stretch. So Steffib's and Zeebah's experience should be yours as well.

sew them closed first. Then hem the skirt.
