Let's talk (fake) hair....care and feeding of!

Hey Bhuz....I'd like to open a discussion about fake hair...ponies, full wigs, and 3/4 types...

What do you do to make them look less 'wiggy'? Your favorite brands? Places to purchase them?

    Here's a couple of thoughts I have:

Toupe' clips are great...sew at least three into the cap of your hair pieces (I happen to use five) at the front and sides.

I love Sally Beauty for supplies, wefts (to add streaks to hair pieces) and that Paris Hilton 'Band-It' 3/4 wig that sometimes goes on sale for $20.

Thinning shears are my best friend. It softens the ends and if you're very careful you can thin the interior layers to make them lighter and give them more movement. If the piece is long I'm pretty aggressive on softening the ends...too blunt is a dead giveaway. Not that we should be self conscious about wearing faux hair, it is distracting if someone's piece is very obviously 'bought hair.'

Hair accessories help to make a convincing illusion too. There's the old standby headband that matches your costume of course and if you've gone into a Claire's lately they have whole sections of rhinestone hair goodies (swoon).

If the sides of your hair are long enough you can blend them into the sides of your hair piece when you pull them back (and clip or). The same can be said of your bangs, whether or not you pull them back away from your face.

I've done experiments with cleaning solutions. My favorite is mild laundry detergent and fabric softener. HAND WASHED, not in the washing machine. Fake hair is a fiber, after all and the softener helps cut static. So far I've not had a bad result.

Another thought on washing---they don't need to be washed that often, as in every 5-6 wearings. In between if they pick up food or smoke odors Febreze works nicely to take care of that as does generous airing out.

I store mine in their own drawer and skip the plastic bags and styrofoam heads. When I travel I wrap them in a t-shirt or cloth bag. I've had wigs and hairpieces get funky while stored in plastic and if you put your wigs on those heads long term your wig caps can get stretched out.

Don't comb or brush them wet, by the way. Detangle before you wash them and all you'll need is a touch up after they've dried (you can lay them flat on a towel or on a doorknob if you don't have cats in the house).

    Hope this helps!

Good info. I use a wig wash on mine.

#1 best faux hair care product I've found so far is conditioning spray especially for fake hair. I use one made by Revlon but I'd like to experiment with other brands. It really makes combouts between washings easier and brings the piece back to life when it starts looking a little raggedy.
