What to do with 8 yards of burnout velvet?
So, mumble mumble years ago a troupe I was in did a costume with a black rayon/silk burnout velvet vest and belt...I bought the undyed velvet, dyed it black and sold it at cost to the troupe members to make their own vests & belts. I over-ordered the velvet (obviously), and it sits in my craft room looking forlorn.
It's currently off-white, a color I can't/don't wear, but I can dye it pretty much any color(s). Eight yards of 45" wide viney-floral design scrumptuosity...
Any ideas? It's really glorious stuff and I'd like to do something with it...

A beledi dress might be nice.

A winter dance dress with a full skirt (sort of like a ballroom style)? A cloak-style cover up?

Is it stretchy or non-stretch? I made a black velvet mermaid skirt once and used non-stretch burnout black velvet for the triangular inserts which looked great. Or if it's stretchy, make a whole mermaid skirt from it, like those gorgeous Emans.

..g.:
What would you make with it?
I had the same thought but then I decided that I have heaps of fabric that isn't being sewn up either . . . speaking of which, I really need to work on it tomorrow.
I like the ideas I've seen so far.
could make nice hipscarfs and get long chainette fringe to edge it.
I like the idea of the beledi dress . . . and like was mentioned for the skirt . . . you could use the burnout fabric to make inserts to give it a fuller look. It would make great sleeves for the dress.
You could make a coverup too . . . kimono style.

Dharma Trading Co. has a special dye that will turn two colors on burnout fabric, check it out: Alter Ego Dyes
Product description: Alter Ego Dyes are designed specifically for dyeing patterned Silk/Rayon blends like Devore Silk Satin and Devore Silk Velvet, where the backing is silk and the pattern overlay is rayon. The silk dyes only color the silk fibers and the rayon dyes only color the rayon fibers creating beautiful two-color effects. The results are fantastic and they are so easy to use, you will love them!

Re: What to do with 8 yards of burnout velvet?
I have used the Dharma dye mentioned above, results were stunning. I made a leotard from burn-out then made a mermaid skirt. Worn together it looks like a dress. I also had a lovely skirt to wear in other ways. Made a shrug from leftover bits and a hip wrap. Lots of versatility and I always received compliments. (I cheated when I made the leotard, I attached the upper 3/4 to sturdy low-cut boy shorts. I made it with 3/4 sleeves so I could pin fabric to the lower edge for various looks.)

showtime, sounds fascinating; I'm wondering how the leotard went together since my fabric is non-stretch...
