How to tie on a sequin spangle hip scarf without damaging?

    Hello everyone!

So at Yaa Halla this weekend I purchased a hip scarf with some of my portion of the moolah my Troupe won (Best Tribal Troupe! Yay!). I LOVE IT (a fire colored hip scarf? YES PLEASE THAT IS FOR ME!!) but I'm a little worried about actually wearing it & was looking for some advice.

Here is a pic of it laid out on my pillow:

Here is a close up pic of the sequin spangles:

When I tried it on when I got home I knotted it in front like normal but I noticed when I untied it a few of the delicate spangles fell to the floor. I didn't tie the knot tight at all after all I was just trying it on but still they came off.

Does anyone have any experience with a scarf like this? I really only plan to use this for practice (if I can ever work it into a performance you bet I will!) but it's very lovely and I don't want to damage it!

I safety pin my hip scarf with beaded fringe. I was told this would help keep the fringe nice and not cause it to break easily. The scarf is 2 years old, worn often enough, and is good shape, even though I do occasionally tie it. Perhaps that would work?

Do you just run the safety pin through the fabric once or more?

i know, it's the simplest questions but I *really* like this scarf & want it around for a long time. ..l;,

What about sewing in snaps, and then tying a loose, decorative knot over the snaps?

I put I think 4 in, at different points. The pin usually goes in twice, because I don't care if the pin is visible. Unless I need the safety pins for other things, they stay in one of the holes, so I know where they go.

I think snaps are great. Safety pins are also good. I just take it through the fabric once, but I'd use 3 or 4 others to attach it to my skirt/pants also.

The silver pailette saidi dress that I have up on the swap page came with came with a matching hipwrap. I didn't even try to tie it, it just didn't look like it could handle it. I put in some strategic snaps and darts so it looks like it's tied and falling in natural folds. (I also had to dart the low back to compensate for my mega booty:) I'll take some pics if you'd like.

Good question. I ruined a nice hip scarf tying it. Wish I had thought of this stuff.

I was at a workshop with Sonya of Chicago a while ago and I noticed how she was avoiding tying her hip scarf: she crossed the right side over to her left hip and pinned it to her yoga pants, then crossed the left over to the right hip and pinned it there. No knot, plus the dangling corners gave more emphasis to her hips.

Sometimes I use one of those hair elastics--the ones with the fancy beads on the ends. Just gently gather the ends as if you were going to tie it but instead wrap the hair bobble however many times you need and then fasten one beaded end of the other. Then I safety pin to pants or skirt on either side slipping one pin through the hair elastic. You can do the same thing with a regular hair elastic and a pretty blingy pin or button on one end.
