Thread: Right Glue To Fix Fan Veil?

I have to fix two pairs of fan veils. One pair came unglued. Another pair I bought was glued incorrectly to the staves and seemed to be glued with super rubber cement style glue--way too much glue factor. A lot of it stuck to the silk when I peeled it off and ruched the silk. I'm not sure if I can get if off the silk without damaging it.

What glue should I use? Scapbooking glue stick (says ok for fabric) doesn't seem to be enough. The first pair I did seems to be coming undone. What would you guys do?

Does your scrapbooking glue stick say it works with wood? I think when they say they glue fabric, they mean more that you can stick felt, broadcloth, and ribbon to paper stock. For this application, you need a multipurpose adhesive that works on both fabric and wood, and dries clear without discoloring. I don't think you need to worry about flexibility or washability here. I'd probably start with a basic crafter's tacky glue like Aleene's in the gold bottle, or even Gem-Tac, and if those didn't hold, move up to something like E6000. You may also want to sand your staves before gluing to give a little more tooth to the wood.

I agree sanding the wood a bit helps. I use Elmer's or any white glue. Might need an occasional touch-up but it isn't too thick or problematic. I use a dab of glue on the tip of the handle of a long, narrow make-up brush so I can access between still attached silk.
