    Clip in Hair Extensions--Anyone w/Experience?

    Hi all.

I'm tempted to search out some clip-in hair extensions for a performance that's coming up this weekend. Knowing that even the fake hair extensions are pretty pricy, I wanted to get some ideas first.

Has anyone used them? Love/Hate them? Thoughts?

    Thanks!

I haven't personally used them, as I've just been using a cheapy 3/4 wig from my local "ethnic" wig store. However, one of my co-workers recently got some from Sally Beauty Supply. They are human hair clip-ins, which means you can do whatever you want with them. She actually died them, and all of her own hair, so that they are a perfect match. She curls them, straightens them, everything. I've been so impressed with them, that I'm considering going out and getting some for myself!

Oooh.... A friend of mine told me that they had nice ones at Sally's. Maybe I should head (no pun intended) over there after work.

Just looking can't hurt, right? ;)

LOVE! Mine looks great, isn't too heavy, and is VERY secure (toupee clips). It adds length and volume, which is especially nice for my fine hair.

I originally bought a set with 6 or 7 pieces. It was a pain to align, and the color was off, so I gave it to my sister.

Later, I bought a single piece style from a kiosk in the mall. The stall looked cheesy, but the lady had a HUGE selection of very nice pieces in the drawers, and she spent a lot of time teaching me how to put it in. She was also able to steer me from what I had in mind to a better (and cheaper) choice.

    Love love love.

My hair was about shoulder-length when these were taken:

It's also really easy to make your own clip in extensions - you can google it and lots of directions come up, and you can buy the wig clips and hair at Sally's.

And I was just sitting here thinking phillyraqs MUST have a Google Alert set up for clip-in extensions. She's the queen.

Re: Clip in Hair Extensions--Anyone w/Experience?

I use clip in hair extensions when I want a little extra length and volume (my hair is already pretty long). right now I just use one row of double layer 18" hair, but I think I am going to move up to 2 rows of 20" soon.

I was really afraid to use them at first for fear they would fall out during a show, but so far so good.

My hair dresser advised me to tease and hairspray my hair where the clips are going to go to give them extra hold - works like a charm! I just got hair and sewed the clips on myself. I can barely sew a button on a shirt so if I can do it anyone can. lol

I used "beverly johnson" real human hair and it has held up amazingly well! I've had it for almost 6 months and it still looks great. I had another brand of human hair before but it turned in to a poof-y mess after one washing! so definitely research the brand of hair you plan to purchase so you make a good investment.

I think clip-ins are great, and so much better for your hair than permanent extension :)

One of my classmates has hair she bought at Sally's and attached to toupee clips, and it looks great. It was a wonderful match and they stay in place really well.

Re: Clip in Hair Extensions--Anyone w/Experience?

I use 14" clip in human hair extensions that I purchased at Sally Beauty and I love mine!

I have found my red hair color very difficult to match in synthetic wigs, so I bought light brown extensions and henna'ed them. Actually, when I bought the extensions I was using conventional dye, so my extensions have been dyed and then henna'ed.

I can put them in place in about 5 minutes. I have worn them straight and curly.

My hair is about to outgrow them, but I still wear them for extra volume. I may look into longer ones eventually.

When I went to Sally's with my friend to check out the human hair extensions, the girl working told us to make sure to get REMY hair. I don't remember what the acronym means, but basically there are two different ways hair is processed. Hair that is not Remy is basically all thrown together to be washed, detangled, and separated. The problem with that is that the hairs end up facing "up" and "down" in every bunch. Because your hair cuticles all flow in one direction, hair that is not all running the same way will end up getting that poofy, frizzy look once you start brushing it. Remy hair, is all processed with the hair all facing in the same direction, keeping it smoother and softer.

Thanks for all the info. yes, I was told before that it should be "Remy" hair, and the first pack I bought claimed to be that but it still went poofy - so I guess they were lying :(

for the women who got their hair at Sally's Beauty: what was the brand name of the hair??

I used Hairdo wig by jessica Simpson. It´s one piece and you can easily clip it in your own hair. I bought them at ebay seller king_rat or something similar...

Looked very good and natural. You should only know that wavy ist not wavy, its really curly.

I should have waited and read all of your helpful remarks! I went to Sally's and didn't find anyone too helpful. I cheaped out and bought a synthetic piece. I knew it was synthetic but I thought it was several peices to clip in--it's one piece like a fall. It's gorgeous, but not what I'm looking for. I'll be posting it to our swapmeet!

Now I'm more determined to get the good ones!

    Thanks, all.

Re: Clip in Hair Extensions--Anyone w/Experience?

I use clip in extensions to fill up my long but thin hair. I had some ready made first but sold it after trying it - too many pieces, too difficult for me.

Then I made some myself using a weft I cut into pieces and sewed together again so I got one thicker, about a yard long piece and sewed toupet clips to it.

I need a hairband to secure it, otherwise it starts slipping down my very fine hair during a full length show but it is perfectly easy to clip in and I love it.

Nadira--those pictures are beautiful! Your hair looks incredible. I would NEVER have thought it wasn't 100% yours--even now that I know it's extensions!

Depending on the response I get while trying to sell my error on the swapmeet, I might try cutting it apart and turning it into several pieces.... Hm....

Re: Clip in Hair Extensions--Anyone w/Experience?

I've been tempted to do that, too, with a Jessica Simpson piece I bought. It's a little too big and heavy to blend well under my fine hair, so I was thinking of cutting it in half or thirds widthwise and using only part of it. If anyone has done so and can advise on how best to do it -- or how NOT to do it -- please post.

I think the one I have is this:

You can buy a weft of hair (usually available at local stores that sell "ethnic" extensions, but make sure you get the sewn "weft") with clips attached (or sew the clips in yourself), cut to the width that is right for you, and attach as in this Jessica Simpson "Hairdo" video, leaving your hair in the back down. The wefts are thinner than the piece shown but also wider, so you usually get enough in one package to do more than one layer.

Awesome video! I'm sold! I think the piece I bought in error is similar to the one in the video.... Maybe I should try it out....

I finally got brave and cut the bottom 1" (the nape portion) off the cap of my Jessica Simpson piece, which had seemed too big to hide properly under my fine hair. Instantly wearable! Can't wait to try it out in performance.

Re: Clip in Hair Extensions--Anyone w/Experience?

I just bought a piece that is quite similar to the one in the video. I LOVE it!Seriously. It is soo easy and I don't need any help putting it on. I've performed twice with it and done a lot of hair flicks and it stays on like my own hair :)
The hairdresser I bought it from said that i could pull strands out through the large holed mesh to make it even more secure. I did that and it works pretty well. I have almost as long hair as the piece but it adds a lot of volume to the ends.
Here's a pic of me in the hair.

My mum has a piece like that that she uses for performance wear... It's synthetic, but you would never know, it looks so realistic. It blends into her hair perfectly.

I went the opposite way and bought a set of human hair clip ins, But I actually regret it, and wish I'd gone with the same as my mum. Hers was cheaper, and so much easier to put in. Mine looks good too, don't get me wrong, but it's a lot more effort to put in, and then fussing all day ("can you see my clips!?")...

mmm.. I know you can buy wigs that are that long (you can buy wings down to your knees on ebay, the anime cosplayers wear them)... I dunno about extensions though. You could try looking on ebay, but short of going to a salon and paying large amounts of money for it, i don't think you can.

I've got a good synthetic ponytail that's that long. Bet you could cut it up and make some pretty fab extensions if you were handy!

I agree: I was planning to buy human hair, and the sales lady talked me out of it. Human hair requires a lot more care, and, like your own hair, doesn't hold styling for long. My synthetic piece just needs a spritz of shine spray and a gentle brushing, and holds its shape perfectly. (Mine was listed as "straight", but has soft, loose waves at the end.)

Re: Clip in Hair Extensions--Anyone w/Experience?

It's not so much the care or styling involved that i mind, I basically do to them what I do to my own over-bleached hair (conditioning spray, heat defence spray, straighten and voila), it's just clipping the bastards in! :P It takes ages to try and get them all sitting right, so you can't see the clips, but so it doesn't look too.. Mullet-ish.

I pretty much had to go with human hair, I dye my hair a lot, so if I got synthetic ones, I'd be buying a new shade every 3 weeks. :P That's (for me) the main advantage of having human hair ones.. I bought a new shampoo, a toning one.. But it was a lot stronger than my old one, and a day before a performance, my hair went white from it! But, being human hair, I was able to wash the extensions with it as well, so they matched :).

SO EXCITED!!! I got my 26" REMY extensions delivered today at work!!!!!

I bought them off of eBay for like $55, free shipping (that was like the 15th of September).

When I get home tonight, I'll straighten my hair, and put them in and post some pictures and let you know what I think about them!
