Need Costuming advice: Which skirt with this belt?
I am trying to decide between this:
http://www.flyingskirts.com/images/c...-bow-close.jpg
and this:http://www.flyingskirts.com/images/c...n-all-kris.jpg
Here is the belt to go on top: (see below)
I'll be wearing a velvet tie back bra with moderate coinage/shells/doo-dads and a velvet U-top from L. Rose.
Would a black skirt be too much black? I am toying with idea of colored skirt with black hem Sage? Teal? What woud show off the belt best? Would a mirrored hem clash with the brass?
Incidentally, how do I know which side of the belt goes in front? The stones or the plain side? It hooks on the side and I am stumped
Thanks for all advice.

I like them both..purple goes really well with gold and so does green. I like colors both equally, so I'd choose which one is least expensive.

On the belt: the longer chains go over your backside. They then mold to it much as a cupped butt belt does. Says she who owns 2 of these puppies and am lusting after a couple more. . .
As for the skirt, are there any other colours in the bra and U top? That might be the best indicator. Keep in mind that, as I understand it, most traditional ATS dancers wear lots of black at least as a basic building block.

Re: Need Costuming advice: Which skirt with this belt?
Sorry, let me clarify, I already have the U-top in black, I am trying to choose which skirt would go with what I already have. I dance mostly Cabaret, so am I totally going more ATS with this look? I fell in love with that belt on the swap meet and had to have it :-) so now I am trying to build a costume around it. I definitely want a flying skirt to spin around in so I gues that would put me in a more tribal look? I was thinking still cabaret sort of? I need help.

Re: Need Costuming advice: Which skirt with this belt?
I have this belt and the Costless version. When I am dancing pretty strictly AmCab, I wear it with silk and chiffon. When I am more "folk" or "Gypsy" then I go with a skirt such as the Flying Skirts ones, which I love, BTW. So it's a shadowy area.
Personally, with a velvet U top, I might go with a straight or trumpet skirt were I concerned about looking more Cab and a Turkish vest with elbow length sleeves for a more earthy look.
But, that is simply my opinion. Enjoy the adventure of putting together a costume which you have fun with!

Ansuya manages to create "tribaret" looks really successfully, and I think all you have to do is choose really shiny colorful accessories - not rhinestones necessarily, but yes, I think the mirrored edge to the one skirt you're considering would look great and add sparkle (even thought the sage is pretty too). Some shiny coin or beaded jewelry and armbands will keep it from being too severe. I LOVE these pieces Bahtya - let's see pics when you've pulled it all together!

Love the belt! However, if you want to stay in the more oriental styling, I would recommend something that's a bit more Vintage Orientale/American Cabaret styled, like Dahlal's Sari Gypsy skirt (https://www.dahlal.com/default.aspx?n=1&hs=AA10-01SK) or their Golden Gala skirt (https://www.dahlal.com/default.aspx?...den+gala+skirt).
I wear my coin sets with Akai skirts, too.

Re: Need Costuming advice: Which skirt with this belt?
1-Depends. If all your troupe or tribe is dressed in black, no. If dancing on a stage with a black backdrop, yes. If dancing outside, no. If dancing outside in 40 deg heat, yes. See what I mean? It's all about context. That being said, you will never go wrong with a black 25 yard skirt, just like you never go wrong with a "little black dress", bc it's a basic. You can dress it up, dress it down.
2- First thing that comes to mind is that a black hem would get dirty real fast... ANd on stage, your skirt may end up looking shorter bc the bottom blends in with the background
3- purple, violet, wine, burgundy (colors that are opposite of yellow on the color wheel), but a nice deep royal blue would work too.
4- not necessarily. if the belt is the only brass you wear, or if the mirrored hem is the only mirrors, then yes. But if you have a hip scarf or hair ornament with mirrors on it, or brass bracelets or necklace, then it ties the look together.

Re: Need Costuming advice: Which skirt with this belt?
I'd go w/ purple... but if you want more tribaret look instead of a tribal look, I'd go with a chiffon circle skirt instead... my brass belt looks awesome w/ chiffon or satin. The black skirt and teal skirts I wear with it really make the brass "pop". Do a skirt w/ an abstract pattern on it or a lurex stripey skirt to make it look all tribaret/vintage.

Re: Need Costuming advice: Which skirt with this belt?
Yes that would pull the mirror and brass together.
Exactly, by themselves the mirrored skirt and brass just wasn't inspiring me but couldn't put my finger on why.
The Sari Gypsy skirt would look very cool. Does it spin? I've seen the flying skirt brand in action and it is great.
You guys are awesome! Thanks for all the ideas.
