How do you look like a belly dancer when you have Farah Fawcett hair?
My hair reaches the top of my shoulders, is very fine, and has long layers (Farah retro). I have belly dance costuming, music, and dancing, etc. it's just that from the neck up I feel like someone playing dress up. When performing at haflas I usually wear it up in a loose sort of up do but I'm getting bored with that.
Head scarfs are out for me:
1. I have a 5-head, not a forehead-it's huge and I hate it
2. Whenever I wrap any kind of scarf around my head my fine hair crushes down and I look like a pin head
I would feel sort of silly in a wig or hair piece. Besides all I can find around here are the kind that look like barbie-calibur hair.
What do you med. hair length girls do with your hair?

I had medium length hair for a short time... bad hairdresser... long story. Anyway, I always liked it when I left it down but put part of it up to the side a bit w/ a cute little hair clip... like a flower from claires or something. I'd add a few vertical curls here and there.

Re: How do you look like a belly dancer when you have Farah Fawcett hair?
I bought a hair clip so it would look like I had more hair then I do. My hair is rather fine too so instead of only using one "ponytail" to clip it into I would use at least two and I kept some of the hair out in front for some nice curls in front to match the texture of the clip. Now I've just grown it but I received several compliments on the look and it was easy, secure, and didn't take much time.

How about a paper bag?

I find that washing a hair piece removes some of that shine that makes it a dead giveaway. A good color match is crucial...Sally Beauty has a nice selection of Revlon and (ulp!) Paris Hilton pony tail hair pieces. You'd probably get the Paris Hilton brand ones for pretty cheap now, tee hee! A chignon with pretty jewelled stick pins would be pretty too...when I had shoulder length hair I used a Hairdini to make the illusion that there was more hair than there was.
A turban style headband worn at your hairline would eliminate the 5head issue...mine is high too and that works.

There are a couple of articles on hairstyle ideas for belly dancers on my web site at General Notes on Belly Dance Costumes, Hair Styles, Makeup, and Appearance - a couple by me, and a couple by Dina Lydia.

Re: How do you look like a belly dancer when you have Farah Fawcett hair?
I don't know if you can find them retail but the one I got was a very close color match and the hair was so full that it hid the clip. I was able to make my own hair match exactly by darkening it slightly with mousse so even if it showed it just looked like I had pulled my own hair back into a ponyclip. If I hadn't been able to get such a close match I am sure it wouldn't have looked anywhere near as good.
If you can buy one retail by all means do so. I lucked out since I bought mine sight unseen from a friend that didn't need it anymore but if you do have to go online many sites will send you free swatches that you can use to pick the right shade.

Re: How do you look like a belly dancer when you have Farah Fawcett hair?
Clip in human hair extensions would work very well with shoulder-length layered hair. There have been several threads about these.
I bought my 14" extensions at Sally Beauty for about $75. I have tried clip on ponytails and 3/4 falls and never felt comfortable in the, but I love my clip-in extentensions. The only problem is my hair is about to surpass them in length. They are about equal right now so they add volume but not length.
Anyway, when my hair was shoulder-length with weird layers, the extensions made me finally feel like a belly dancer.

A sock bun dressed up with pins, barrettes, feathers, etc works well.

I don't think shoulder length hair is quite long enough for a sock bun.

To compensate for length volume is usually a good place to start. When I had shorter hair I would do the classic 80's upside-down hair spray flip to give my hair more volume.
Decorations also help. I love flowers, feathers, rhinestone clips, tiny tiaras and ornate headbands to decorate.

Re: How do you look like a belly dancer when you have Farah Fawcett hair?
OK seriously - why is shoulder length hair such a tragedy?
I actually used to wear short, curly wigs when I got tired of the mane and/or when I couldn't unsnarl it. This is usually come to think of it...l;,
And I had shoulder-length and chin length Cleopatra-style wigs that were gorgeous for my face.
Shorter hair can show your neck and shoulder to great advantage. So I wouldn't think your style is per se not "belly dancer-esque."
But -if you really hate your hair I'll be honest: imo the best alternative, besides the paper bag, is a wig. The other stuff can take hours to do, with the pins etc, flowers, combs, extensions, it's very time consuming and they can fall out too.
With wigs you can completely change your look and persona instantly. If you are doing several shows a night and start looking ratty from sweating too much, presto! You look awesome again. If you are blond and want to be dark - or vice versa no problem - etc.
I say this as a person who has had several horrible disasters at the hairdresser, including the time my highlights went brassy so I had her dye them back dark, then my whole hair was olive green
so I had a fit, so she said ok we will do henna and then I had PURPLE hair.
Etc...cr.:
So wigs. I love wigs.
Just a thought.

I happened to have a couple sock buns lying around. This is what you just inspired me to do.

Literally just took less than 10 minutes, 5 of which were finding both of the sock buns! Instant Princess Leia!Last edited by _Kepi_; 09-10-2010 at 01:53 PM.

Re: How do you look like a belly dancer when you have Farah Fawcett hair?
I wear synthetic clip-in ponytails a lot. Shine spray and gel or mousse on my own hair plus a big blingy clip at the side of the pony help hide the transition. Take a look at the ones from from Forever Young aka Troika International. They're very good quality for the money -- a big step up from the drugstore/Sally's options for synthetics -- and come in a wide range of colors and blends for a good match.

Re: How do you look like a belly dancer when you have Farah Fawcett hair?
Aww. Yeah, if your hair is that fine, it wouldn't work without clip-ins. But if you go to a real wig store, they do have some very nice add-in types, and they can be custom-dyed. It could really help you find some new looks.
And Kepi--bwahahaha, love it. All you need it a gold bikini and you're ready for Halloween.

I can sympathize with 5 head. If anyone has a solution to 5-head keep me posted! Maybe I could sell mine as advertising space!

I have a six head. My favorite photos of myself include a lovely headband a la Ansuya, with my very fine hair pulled up into a ponytail (often augmented with a fake ponytail).

Maybe someone should start a "how to cope with 5-plus head" thread!

Re: How do you look like a belly dancer when you have Farah Fawcett hair?
People with five heads are fortunate in that they can WEAR headbands without looking stupid. I have the forehead of a neanderthal, so they never work on me.
Sarah Skinner's hair is reasonably fine and the thick, embellished headbands she wears (again, similar to Ansuya) look great on her because she also has a high, open forehead.
Have you tried drying your whole head upside down, then putting a headband on at the hairline? The hair will look quite voluminous behind.
