Carwash Skirts!?!?!?
So I'm really curious about the way these look while dancing...
Does anyone have a video they can share of a dancer wearing this style costume? I'm talking about "Sweet Escape" by Pharonics, or anything similar.
Carwash belly dance is not giving me what I'm looking for on youtube .w.:
Thanks!

Re: Carwash Skirts!?!?!?
I found this video of Daria Mitskevich wearing a carwash type costume.

But I'm looking to see a less layered look, more like the Pharonics style

Very nice, but it does look as if the strips fly out when you spin, so if you like to spin, consider how much leg you want to expose! And consider color coordinated dance briefs underneath. Great movement in that skirt, though.

Re: Carwash Skirts!?!?!?
I LOVE carwash skirts. Especially the ones that are layered in two colors. (but then, my legs are probably my best feature at this point in my life LOL)
You *can* stitch the panels together as far down as you like for modesty, though I admit that's a lot more work than for a skirt with just one or two splits. Dance trunks are a necessity.
Here's a question: Does anyone know where to get them?
I'd love to have some carwash skirts to wear with bra/belt sets, but I can't find nice ones anywhere other than as part of a bra/skirt costume!

Thanks for the vid (isn't Daria lovely?), I've wondered how these skirts look while dancing, too. Definitely show a lot of leg and have a ton of fluid motion, especially in shimmies; really like the look!!
Have recently seen a couple of cossies with carwash skirts is the swap meet, but passed them up because I was clueless about the skirts...now am going back to see if they're still there...

Same here! After seeing this video I think they look really great and exciting! Would still love to see another video with a different style though. Please post if you have or find one ..g.:
Lauren, I have never seen a car wash skirt on its own. I'm sure it can be custom made though!

Re: Carwash Skirts!?!?!?
I'm not sure how much of the skirt you can see in this video. What I did was I layered the panels over each other instead of side by side to provide more coverage. The long fringe also helps to keep the panels in place.
This is the original version of the costume. Initially, the panels went all the way around in a complete circle.
I later redid the costume. Re-arranged the fringe, took off somethings, like the poofy star in the middle. I cut it up and just had the flat star, etc.
With the skirt I took the carwash panels and arranged them to simulate a 3/4 panel skirt instead of a complete circle. Again, overlapping the layers to provide more coverage.

You can start to see the skirt around 3:15. By the way, I'm horrified at my zill playing in this clip. I wasn't really playing them, I was tapping them to keep the beat but I didn't realize how much the sound carried! If you look closely you see my fingers are over the zills to muffle the sound. Oh well.Last edited by norma; 09-19-2010 at 06:42 PM.

Here's one of the cossies with a carwash skirt I had recently seen on the Swapmeet (I just love blues and greens):

Unfortunately, it's too small for me.
Norma - great vid! Love all that wonderfully fringed-out costume; I am such a fringe addict.

Re: Carwash Skirts!?!?!?
My favorite way to make car wash skirts is to get a length of stretch velvet, and a rotary cutter, and cut the height I need for the skirt, then then amt. I need to go around, then use the rotary cutter spaced every 3 or 4 inches or so, and slice as high up as I want. I also like cutting much smaller fringe (1 or 2 inches), then pulling on it to force the velvet to roll into a tube. If you want it to stay in rectangular strips, you really need to sew 2 layers together (cut them at the same time, right sides together, sew as close to the cut as you like, I usually do 1/4 of an inch from the cut edge), then turn all the strips inside out. If you do it in lycra, top stitch the edge so they lay smooth.
It's also fun to do these in 2 colors, so you can reverse them, and when you spin and walk the color closest to your body shows in little flashes and flickers.
Also, if you do the skinnier fringe, you can string beads and doo-dads on them, and you can do a netted effect part of the way down, which looks awesome over a solid colored fitted skirt.
