Thread: For the Russian Ladies and anyone else.Where do you get the dresses for Iraqi style dance. *videos added for visual*

I see the Russian women wearing really pretty dresses. Do they make them themselves or buy them? I've scoured the net and don't see anything. I want one. Do you just get a fitted galabeya and sew up the arm slits? I'm thinking out loud here, so some guidance would be appreciated.

Can't help with the dresses but love having a chance to post one of my favorite Iraqi videos with gorgeous women in evening dresses dancing around. My Iraqi ex says that his sisters dance just like this at family functions (and I've seen the video to prove it..g.:)

As a side note, the videos of these Russian competitions are not really what Iraqi dance looks like. The Russians are famous for really going over the top, especially for these competitions. If you actually look at Iraqi videos, you will see many of the same moves but way toned down.
So I think these videos can be better described as Russian competition dancers' take on Iraqi dance.

Ohhh, I REALLY like this dress. I have come to the conclusion that these dancers are making them or have semstresses who make them b/c I just can't find them anywhere.

I am sure these dancers in particular are having their awesomely talented Russian designers make those dresses for them. They really put a LOT into those competitions.

This thread actually inspired me to start learning some Iraqi dance (I know a bit of Khaliji but it's very generic), so I'd like to get one of those eventually. Damn, I wish I knew someone who could teach me. Or that Iraq wasn't out of bounds for visiting...

You probably won't be able to get it from the same source as those dancers, but there are ways to get by. I am sure you could ask L Rose or a local seamstress. Or you could check out ebay. I just ran a search for "long sleve gown" on there and it came up with some dresses that would be quite acceptable for this dance.

Does this look at all familiar?

Spinning on your sidenote:this special type of dance(that iraqis see as gypsy style) doesn´t look exactly like this when danced socially or performed in other places than these competitions...it´s VERY busy and many untypically steps and movement have been added.(for example I´ve never seen an iraqi dancer tossing the hair side to side over the head=same move as Jillina is using in her drum solo DVD)

In a way of comparing very roughly,you can describe the dancing in the clips as "MTV video girls" of iraqi music.
Here are some clips of female dance styles on theater stage...in other words these are the "Reda-ized" versions;)
Iraq is a VERY big country with many,many different folkloric music&dance styles...from kurdish in the north to afro-iraqi in the south.

Like the roma in many other countrys gypsies from Iraq are marginalized,harassed&looked down upon.
The word "kawliya/qawliya" is seen as a derogatory word to use as an insult.

Yes, I did search this when you first mentioned it. This is the basic version of what the Russian ladies are wearing.It also would be nice for a basic Classical Persian dress. I want the ultra fancy version. ..l;,

I can´t really express what I feel when I read this...I knew that female entertainers have been threatened by members of the Mahdi militia.

I tend to agree. The majority of the private events I perform for in San Diego are for the Iraqi community (we are blessed with a huge Chaldean community) The dancing in the Russian videos is much much "more" than what I've seen at the weddings, birthday parties, clubs, etc. I would also consider this an amped up competition version with lots of "non-traditional" moves thrown in for the competitive wow factor. The speed and intensity is also much more amped up IMO.

Which of course is not intended to detract from the dancing that was presented.
