Question Honest opinions needed (gasp!): Does this costume wash me out?

    Well, does it?

I love it and I special ordered it from Dahab...but I am terribly afraid I can't wear silver.

I see what you mean. If you wore it by itself I would say yes it washes you out. But paired with the red it looks great. I had the same problem with a white ab bra and belt said I had. I ended up adding turquoise to it.

If you were just going to wear the set with the red, I would suggest adding red. Not a good option though if you are planning on wearing it with other costumes. I think if you added bright colored accessories you'd be fine.

I wouldn't quite say it washes you out, but I'm not sure I like the red with it. I think of silver as being a cool tone, and my natural tendency is to pair it with cooler colors. I would be curious to see the same bra and belt on you with royal blue, teal, turquoise, lilac, sky blue, or a mid-range green instead. I wouldn't go too pastel or too dark on the other pieces, though.

I almost hate to say it but the contrast of the really fair skin and silvery-white bedlah with the bright red costume pieces sort of reminds me of a candy cane. Maybe tack on some sequined holly appliques for the next month and a half, call it your Christmas outfit, and then get a different set of L.Rose pieces to coordinate with it for the rest of the year?

No, not with the red vest and skirt; I think it looks great on you. I'm pale too and even with my brown hair I can look very washed out in all silver or all white bras & belts and oddly enough, a straight black bra & belt set just isn't very flattering on me.

I do have an all-silver bra and belt set (it's a Great Loop) that I wear with a shiny lycra straight skirt and matching red gauntlets. To bring more silver accents to all-red skirt, I added silver metallic trim to hem and slit of red skirt, a silver and rhinestone brooch pinned to the top of the skirt slit and silver rhinestone bracelets over the red gauntlets. I did not want to add red to the bra and belt itself, because I wear it with other costume colors.

It sounds like a lot, but it really does help bring the whole look together, and I do not think it is candy cane looking at all, but it definitely works well for Xmas, and Valentines Day gigs.

I think it looks nice and perhaps adding another bold color accessories like turquoise or purple with the red...do some layering and have some of the silver running through the layering pieces. I wear silver and white a lot but I have dark hair and features.

Wow.. You look amazing in red!!!!

Could you maybe add a ribbon, sequins etc, where the bedlah meets your skin? Something easy removeable, so you could change it out after what color skirt you are wearing. On the top of the belt, and along the upper bra edges?

I wonder if a gold bra/belt would work better for your skin? I know I do better in silver because I have olive skin.

that's a really good idea, Sandra did that with a rhinestone bedlah, I think that would help with this. I like the lines of the costume on you, but, yeah, I think you need something else closer to your skin to make it pop.

I also think this is a brilliant idea!

And I agree that perhaps the red is too much here, though that's a great red for you. Maybe a deep rosy pink, a soft turquoise, or even a pale clear green might be something to try. Then you wouldn't have to compete quite so much with the color.

I like it with the color very much but I think it would wash you out if you wore it by itself. LOVE you in red though. WOW!

i love it paired with the red but i agree with the above. i think if you wore it alone it would wash you out, but pairing it with bright colors works. gorgeous!

I think it'd look better w/ deeper colors than the red... Like a dark navy blue or wine red. I think it would have less of a washing out effect that way. I really like the idea of adding something detachable to the bra and belt that will compliment whatever color you are wearing. Maybe you could add a few multicolor embellishments (stones or something) to the bra... just here and there. I think that would just make it perfect.

I was going to suggest this too, if you add a bright pop of color between your skin and the silver, I think that would make a big difference and it wouldn't wash you out.

I don't think it makes you look washed out. I think the red overwhelms the silver though.

I don't think it washes you out - it think of "washed out" as looking sickly or ill and you definitely look fabulous! Caveat: I'm a very pale (almost blue ..l;,) curvy chickadee and I REFUSE to be told I can't wear certain colours. Will not be told!

I'd like to see itwith "cool" spectrum colours, like purple, though. I'm one of those annoying people who sees gold with warm colours and silverwith cool ones.

I like it paired with the bright red. It will work with bright, bold colors. If you don't want to the silver next to your skin, you could always wear a colorful body stocking too. It's very pretty, but I wouldn't wear it with pastel colors.

    I agree with the majority:
    1. the red looks amazing on you
    2. the red is so bright & the silver too pale you need something to incorporate the red into the silver. i like the idea of a red hoohaw along the top edge of the bra or something. maybe even doing your necklace/jewelry in red instead of silver/crystal would be enough to give that little extra color to your skin so the silver bedlah works better
    3. if the red & silver are too much of a contrast, try some other jewel tones. i think the silver will work on you when paired with something richly colored but on its own its too pale.

BTW. I just went back and looked at the picture you posted with this and it took me back a few years to when you asked for feedback on your overall look and folks gave you ideas on how to glam it up even more & add that final polish...I just want to say that you look so incredible. All that effort and interest in improving your total package is paying off in spades. Washed out by a silver costume or not, you POP!

I also think the silver is overwhelmed by the (lovely) cherry red and it's possibly a bit cool on you. HAVE you considered adding a tiny bit of gold to the bedleh? My teacher - a lover of cool colours, admittedly - had a great silver bedleh which had the odd soft gold bead here and there scattered throughout the fringe. It warmed the silver a little bit. The gold beads used weren't a really yellow-yellow gold, they were more like a golden wheat tone.

Could adding some soft golden beads to pick out the rich beadwork on the costume help? I don't mean creating a definite stand-out golden motif or design, just discreely putting some warmer-toned beads into the mix.

Alternatively, you could maybe find some crystals in a shade you know you love and suit, and add those.

I have a vested interest in the outcome of these deliberations but will answer honestly anyway.

The photo is a bit overexposed, which mutes the color in your skin, but you still look gorgeous -- Russian ice princess for sure! I like the suggestions of scattering in some gold beads or colored crystals if (ahem) you decide to keep it. There's a lot of contrast with this red, but a little red trim tacked along the top edge of the cups and belt would really tie it together, as would some red jewelry. I'd wear this combination during the holiday season for sure, and I'd also love to see this set with turquoise, light teal, lilac, periwinkle, a not-too-cool bright pink, or a deep rose.

My thoughts too! I'm super pale and need really strong colors by my skin or my hip and chest isolations don't look like anything because the audience eye is drawn to the contrast between the bottom of the belt and the skirt!

Ok, so here's a less washed out photo (but not as good). How's the color now?

And I can't believe I'm doing this (but for research's sake)...here is the costume (out of the box, unaltered) with a turquoise skirt. I also have a little u-top thing I can wear with it.

(Speaking as a pale, blonde-headed person myself.) Like others said above, I probably wouldn't wear it as an all-silver/white ensemble. But the silver looks lovely on you with both the red and the turquoise (and I'm sure many other colors as well!), and the contrast in your two most recent pics doesn't wash you out. I think you do run the risk of getting washed out on stage under bright stage lighting, but under normal/less-bright lighting conditions, I say go for it if you love wearing it! :-)
