Re: Looking for advice..
As a former cat suit wearer (and if I ever get this weight off my thighs, I might again) I can tell you that in that colour, I don't think I know of anyone who wore one casually. In modern and jazz classes, possibly. Especially if we had a dance teacher who we wanted to tweek. But as regular clothes or a belly dance costume? No. Not then, and not now!

Re: Looking for advice..
Perhaps you could explain to him that catsuits have never been particularly popular with belly dancers because too much knowledge of the mechanics of the dance can ruin the magic. The effortless vibration of a shimmy isn't quite as ethereal looking when you can watch the knees working furiously.
OTOH, if this is a private matter, then wear whatever the two of you like...
You can change this as an option. Click on "Settings" on the upper right menu bar (with the star), then scroll down the "My Settings" menu on the lower left side until you see "General Settings" and keep going there until you find the "Thread Display Options" section.

Re: Looking for advice..
I would most definitely say no, it doesn't look pretty & sparkly and IMO would look decidedly odd to bellydance in something like that ( except maybe in a class situation) .... offer to wear a BD costume so he can see how beautiful you look
Stifling an urge to dance is bad for your health - it rusts your spirit and your hips.

Re: Looking for advice..
Please....NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Once you start dancing you will face two huge issues:
1) camel toe
2) sweat marks which WILL distract from your dancing.
If you are going to dance publicly you need to tell him that it is your decision what you'll wear and yours alone. If he wants to 'help' he can be driver and bodyguard but not fashion designer

Re: Looking for advice..
NO.....this is not a pretty costume and the whole sweat/camel toe issue mentioned above would be another large NO reason.
If he insists then I think he should also wear a matching ensemble and dance with you.

Re: Looking for advice..
Umm.... when I went to click on that link, I wasn't expecting that!.w.:
Definitely, absolutely, NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES should that be worn to bellydance in public.
This may sound weird, but does he have a "thing" for that kind of outfit- such that he would be pleased to see you in it in a... ahem... private situation? Don't reply- just think about it. Maybe he's trying to fulfill a dream without saying outright what he's looking for.
Just a thought.

Re: Looking for advice..
I think that's exactly where it came from.
Having seen someone bellydance in a skintight catsuit now, I have to say that I still don't think it's a good idea. Maybe with a little flirt skirt and a belt one could get away with it, but it really is not what I would choose as a costume. In the video it seems to come across as purely a seduction dance- not precisely what I would want to be putting out there. Might send the wrong message.
If he thinks that catsuit is sexy, just like he probably thinks belly dancing is sexy (what man wouldn't ..l;,), then it would not surprise me at all for him to make the leap: catsuit + bellydance = SUPER sexy!
That's the male mind for you. :)

..l;,
If this is just for him, in the privacy or your own home, I say "why not?" He won't notice camel toe or sweat. He'll be thrilled.
I've made myself leggings before and worn them with a fringe belt in public (I've seen videos of Zoe Jakes in similar), but that was costumey in another way (and more fusion). If that's not the intention, then no.Keep the song in your throat

Re: Looking for advice..
ITA with all of the above. Privately.. sure, why not? Do whatever....
In a public performance environment? If we all emulated pop music videos, we'd all be dressing like Lady Gaga and Beyonce. Won't fly in my neighborhood, even onstage.
Put another way... if you were in Cairo trying to stand out as an individual and make a name for yourself, it would be important to take risks and try to be unique in your costuming. Fifi's white galabeya, Dina's miniskirts and mondo-cleavage, Mona's fishnet dress or gold bikini were all new and shocking at the time. Of course, it would be a risk that could make or break a career....
If you're anywhere else, people expect a bellydancer to look as much like their fantasy interpretation of the Mysterious East as humanly possible and would be baffled and disgusted to see a dancer in a catsuit.Last edited by Lauren_; 11-17-2010 at 09:11 AM.

Re: Looking for advice..
I'm with the majority- just nononononoNO!
Anyone else watched the otherwise-great teaching on Randa Kamel's "Masters of Egyptian Choreo" dvd? Where she wears a black catsuit? That's painfully obviously a bit too short in the body for her?
Kamel-toe!
Dearly-Beloved was severely freaked out, and I couldn't take my eyes off her nethers- you know, like when you drive past a car crash and you don't want to look but you can't NOT? Car-crash-crotch...not good...you run the risk of that with any catsuit, just because of how the thing is. Anywhere there's a seam and an, erm, natural seam-shaped groove running straight under it, the two will conspire...

Re: Looking for advice..
Fetishes involving bodysuits (spandex/leather/latex) are common enough that I wonder if your boyfriend has one. If that idea isn't a dealbreaker and you're GGG (good, giving, and game) about such things, you might want to broach the topic in a non-judgemental way of saying "look, that body suit is totally inappropriate for the sort of dance I do. That is NOT happening...but if you want to see me in a body suit like that, privately, maybe that is negotiable"

Re: Looking for advice..
I agree with the posters who say hell, no!!! Not in public. What you do behind closed doors is between the two of you but spandex in public was a bad idea in the 80s and it's a bad idea now, lol!

Re: Looking for advice..
There was also a thread not too long ago that featured Fifi in a catsuit. She rocked it, but it is totally not my cup of tea...and not entirely appropriate in most public settings.
