How to get smoke smell out of costumes...

Hey ladies~My house caught on fire, and although my costumes weren't damaged, they do smell of smoke. Any ideas on the best way to get the smell out? Dry Cleaning? All our regular clothes smell fine after a wash...
The dancer cannot be separated from the dance, she also cannot be separated from the history of dancing, from the line of dancers and teachers leading to her.

gentle hand wash in a bath. - test a corner before you you do a whole garment - that would be my best guess.

So sorry to hear about your house! Hope there wasn't too much damage...

Earlier this year, I ordered a tribal bra and belt set from Afghanistan (new velvet base with authentic coins/pendants and vintage fabrics - beautiful!). While beautiful to look at, they arrived with an incredibly strong burnt rubber smell (picture tires burning somewhere?). In desperation, I used "Oust" Air Sanitizer spray and hung them up, first outside, then inside on a hook in front of a fan. Did this for about three days and the smell is completely gone, not even the "clean linen" Oust scent remains. I also do not see any spotting on the fabric, which is mostly black velvet.

Good luck, I hope you get the smoke smell out somehow and that your life is back to normal as much as possible since the fire.

I have heard that steaming and freezing will remove odors... I'd suggest steaming with a gently diluted soap(non-detergent formula) if you can't handwash, and if all else fails... put the dry costumes into freezer bags and freeze for 24 hours. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out!
