Painting silk with Dyna-Flow?
I tried tweaking the color of an Akai skirt with Jacquard Dyna-Flow, which supposedly does not change the hand of the fabric. I tested on a small section, and maybe I did something wrong, but I think it does change the flow of silk quite noticeably. Can somebody with silk painting experience share? My skirt has a very bright shade of orange at the bottom, and I'd love to have a more copper/brick kind of hue, so it is a reasonable, fairly minor change. The subtle color modification I accomplished in my test pleases me, it's just that the fabric lost its softness in the area.

I think dye-na-flo changes the silk texture because it is an acrylic paint. It's completely different from fiber reactive dyes or acid dyes. I used to use it a while back (before bd) and I never got the hang of if. It's almost like using water colors. I wouldn't use further if I were you.

Re: Painting silk with Dyna-Flow?
yes, dyna-flow does leave behind more residue that doesn't really wash out of the silk. the ones I have painted with dyna-flow are noticeably heavier and almost feel thicker for a while, but with repeated use, they do soften up a bit, and it's not enough to make the silk unusable or anything- still, I like using procion dyes with a thickener for painting better.

Thanks a lot! So, indeed, the description seemed too good to be true. Color-wise it actually worked really well when I applied it to wet fabric. Back to the crafts store ;-)

Re: Painting silk with Dyna-Flow?
I have actually found an "instant dye" -- which I'm pretty sure has actually got some kind of paint in it -- that doesn't seem to change the hand of silk. But I was very unhappy with the colors when I tried it -- couldn't get what I wanted out of it. (Also, they tell you "it's concentrated, dilute it heavily" and I found that was fine only if you wanted pastels.)
But for future reference, it's Colorhue dye:
