My Corn Cob Costume
This was purchased for me in Egypt and it's a lovely ruby red velvet and is very well made. Unfortunately, cheap gold sequins sewn in a "corn cob" pattern were all over the skirt and top. I removed the sequins but the velvet is still marked with the lovely ears of corn.
I purchased red and gold beads but am unsure what to do with them to cover the corn. Suggestions for a pattern to incorporate/cover the flattened velvet would be much appreciated. Also, it's stretch velvet so do I use an embroidery hoop to stretch the velvet while I bead?Last edited by rassicahl; 12-30-2010 at 03:50 PM.

Re: My Corn Cob Costume
before adding any other beads what about trying to see if you can get the marks out of the velvet some way?

Mh - there is a trick with which you can remove marks from furniture out of carpets: put icecubes in the marks, let them melt and then: carpet is like new! Sounds unbelievable but it really works.
Maybe, you could try this on your velvet cossie to get the marks out. If it works: Great! If not, you just need to let your costume dry

Needle board and steam. You put the nap side of the velvet down on the needle board, then steam. this should help to release the pile at least enough to make it look more like velvet again.

Ohhh..thank you everyone! I've really been stumped with what to do. I'm not very creative and have never beaded before so this seems like a big ordeal to me. I love your suggestions.

Re: My Corn Cob Costume
I found a velvet cloak that had been packed in a box, lots of wrinkles so deep I called them crinkles. I did not want to risk using a steam iron since it could start to melt the rayon velvet before I notice the problem. I hung the cloak in the bathroom, placed a damp cloth on the inside of the cloak and used a hair dryer to blow the moisture from the damp cloth through the nap of the velvet. I worked slowly in case of an unexpected mishap but I was successful. A few particularly tough crinkles required the moist cloth be placed on the actual pile of the velvet. Since your belt is thick it might be best to work from the outside.
For another design you could use a random starburst outline. Nothing regular, each can be a bit different so no need to match everything.
